Angry Codes?

Can anyone help me...I have a 1998 f 150 2wd, the check engine light is on..seems to be running rough and power is depleted....can I check the codes mannually? Without paying the big bucks at the dealer...I am very mechanically inclined..done this with other vehicles by useing the key or jumper wires...but this is my first f 150...please help....

If you can drive to a auto parts store they will run a scanner check for free. Is this a 4.2 by chance?

OBD-2 started in 1996, and you need a code scanner, you can't use a paperclip any more. If you want, you can buy your own basic scanner for less than 50 bucks. OBD-2 is standardized, a scanner will read basic codes on any vehicle regardless of brand.

Unless you are in California, any large chain auto parts store will read codes free. Make sure you get the exact "P" numbers, don't just let the store give you their interpretation.

Eh...

I'd heed glc's opinion.

However, be wary... the reason it might be running rough is because coolant is leaking into the cylinders and it might hydrolock your engine.

The years afflicted with this syndrome is 1997-early 1998 model years.

In any event, even if it isn't leaking, I'd suggest replacing the intake manifold gasket ASAP if you haven't done so already.

I would only start looking at the gaskets if it's using coolant or there are hydrocarbons in the coolant. Read the codes first.
