Ticking would be cooling down of heat shield or something. A rattle would be something loose.

Lots of fun to track down.

Engine rattles

on an older engine it used to mean you had a problem with carbon and the engine was "dieseling". dont know if thats true on our modular engines since i have not had my 01 do it since i bought it.

The V-6 is not a modular engine.

I had some one listen to it and they said it almost sound like its from the back side of engine. Since my truck is a manual trans could it be the gears kind of slowing down at shutoff? Since the noise is at the back of my engine my second thought is that it could be the cats rattling?

If the truck isn't moving the gears aren't either...at least, you hope not.

Could be something loose back there. Another thread around here mentioned an engine bracket? I don't remember where I saw that.

Are you shutting it off in neutral with the clutch engaged, or with the clutch disengaged? Any difference doing it either way?

It could be that you throw-out bearing is going bad. I had a similar sound before on a '82 CJ-7 Jeep, it ended up being the throw-out bearing.

If i shut the truck off with the clutch pedal pressed in my truck doesn't make the rattle noise... could this be bad input shaft bearings are a bad throwout bearing?

It wont make the noise because you are putting pressure on the throwout bearing. That's how it acts when it's just starting to go out on you. When it's condition worsens, it will start to squeal or rattle when you put pressure on it. It's just at the beginning of it's death....IMO. That's what my experience with throwout bearings have been...

Considering your other thread where you are asking about play in the input shaft, this may be what's doing it.

Thanks for the guys. I guess the culprit is bad input shaft bearings.
