Gas tank

Didn't know where else to post this...

Anyway, not sure if anyone else has noticed this. My tank is 26gal but every time I go to fill up (usually from a little less than a 1/4 tank) and can only get about 18 gallons in there before it clicks. Is less than 1/4 tank really about 8 gallons? That doesn't make much sense.

Even when I've filled up from less than 1/8 tank I can't get more than about 20 gallons.

On a side note, it only cost me $49.00 to fill up yesterday. Much better than mid July.

You never really fill the tank up completely. I have been below the E on my 25 gal before, and only put in a little over 23 gals before it clicked....I am temped to one day drain the tank completely, nd fill it up exactly to 25 gals....that way I will have a true mileage base.

You guys are giving your fuel gauge way too much credit. When it says 1/2, or 1/4 or 1/8, or E it is just a ball park figure. You usually have a little room left below E on most vehicles, just like most have room above Full.

BTW, consistantly running very low on fuel is a good way to clog your fuel filter and to burn up your in-tank fuel pump. Just fill it up when the Low Fuel light comes on and stop worrying exactly how much fuel your tank can hold.

Don't worry about it. I have the 27 gallon tank. My "Low Fuel" indicator comes on, and there is still 5 gallons left in the tank. Get yourself a Scan Gauge II. It will tell you how much fuel you still have.

I bet the fuel filter is in the tank with the pump these days.

As long as there is any fuel in the tank, the pump is still getting cooled, and whatever crud may be in there as well is getting sloshed around, too.

Somebody probably posted some spam and it's been deleted.

unless there is a second fuel filter, it should be an in line on the drivers frame rail about half way between the rear and front axle

I usually get between 21 to the highest of 23.2 mpg on the highway. City can average from 16 to 18. It's like I rarely ever see 19 or 20... it's either going to be the lower or higher of the two.

And yes, I've discovered this problem too with the gas gauge being inaccurate. So far my SGII has been accurate as far as calculating fuel use and reserve. I trust the SGII more than the gas gauge.

we had a rental dodge caravan that we ran and ran and ran on E, until we finally found a gas station. we put in 19.8 gallons on a 20 gallon tank! Talk about running on fumes

I hate to say this, but you are correct. I didn't mention my Dakota or the Compass that we've got, but those things measure gas better than a gas pump probably does right on the gas gauge.

The reason I didn't mention it, because I didn't want to say "Dodge" because it might not float too well over here.

Something about their system makes it a lot more accurate.
