Complete Overhaul
Complete Overhaul
Ok, so here is the plan. I have a 99 4.2 auto. reg/long. I want to have something I can still drive but be able to have fun with (hence why i got the truck in the first place). I have been thinking alot about what I want to do with it and here is what I have come up with. Pulling the motor, rebuilding, forged internals and drop comp to about 8.5-8.7, heads, cam, blah blah. now the part that is getting me is I cant decide on either turbo or supercharged. Turbo would be easier and more powerful but there is nothing like the whine of a supercharger. Either way I figured getting an M112 and having an intake fabricated or Squires turbo kit. And obviously everything else that would go with (computer, rebuilt trans, exhaust, etc). Also planning on lowering probably 2/4, remove all moldings and shave the tailgate handle, paint white with a pearl white ghost flame. Havent decided what to do with the hood and front bumper yet but probably will just go with rear roll pan and figure out the front later. The last thing is has anybody ever put a 6-speed auto on a 4.2? I thought about it and never heard of anyone doing it or if it is even possible with a new bellhousing or anything. Any tips, comments, help from everyone is appreciated. thanks
To add to your undecided mind:
A turbocharged motor will tend to get better gas mileage, depending on how the vehicle is driven.

Depends on the year and model of the tranny. Anything with a Windsor bell housing bolt pattern will mount up. This includes those mated to the 302 and 351.
Automatics - Grab anything you can get from the donor truck, like the cooler, lines, harnesses, mounts, etc....
If it's a C6, C4 or AOD, it's powered off vacuum and RPM of the tranny. There's no electronics to worry about on most of them. The speedo cable is manual and requires the right speedo gear to get it right.
If it's an E tranny - E4OD or EAOD it's electronically controlled. You need to pull the ECU and any harnesses and connectors. Don't expect this to be an easy swap as the PCM needs to be tweaked to use it. It can be done, but I can think of several tranny's I'd rather spend the time and money on.
Manuals - same as the auto's, but grab the clutch linkage, shifter and any other parts you can get. There are no true electronic 5-speeds although some have electronic sensors in them. Grab the sensors if you can.
The most common manual trannys are the M5OD and M5R2. The M5R2 is an older design compared to the M5OD. If I had my choice I'd stick with the M5OD. The parts are easier to find and it has an overdrive gear.
With that said, you'll most likely need a new drive shaft, one that is shorter or longer depending on the swap. You might have to adjust the angle of the rear end, depending on the angle of the drive shaft.

I was leaning more toward the turbo side but who knows what the final product will be. But I swear that I am the only one on here with a reg cab long bed. I cant find anyone else with one that is working on them and talking about it.
