trange "whistling" noise!?!?
trange "whistling" noise!?!?
For the past week or so, whenever my trans is about to **** (4.2l v-6 automatic), I can hear a very hgh pitched (whistling) noise.. it only lasts for a second or two at the most, and only right before shift..
Describe the noise? The best description I can give is what a dog whistle must sound like to a dog.. very high pitch almost inaudible..
The guy (service advisor) at the ford house couldn't hear it, but it seems everyone ele can (family, friends..) The ford guys took thetrans apart and found nothing..
Any clues?
PS- title is supposed to be Strange not trange..

How long have you had this truck? Does its have a cold air intake on it? Does it have a Throttle body spacer on it? I ask because both of those make a high pitched whistle.
Just getting to obvious out of the way.

does it only happen when ur on the gas? this might be unrelated or it might be the same thing, i had a 96 explorer v6 4.0L and it would would emit a very high pitched whistle at certain rpms when i was on the gas, if i would let off or apply more, this whistle would stop. i never found out what it was but i still have it with 160K+ miles on it and no problems (still whistles though)
try these things, like when u get it to whistle, look at ur rpms and try applying more or less gas and see if it makes it stop.
one of the things that i considered it to be was a small exhaust leak, and when i was gettin the engine to turn over at just the right speed, the hole would whistle, but more or less flow would cause it to stop or become inaudible.
just some thoughts. -tuck

I just had this problem last yr. I took me about 4 month to figure it out. I tried everthing for change the belt to the all the pullies and even the alt bearing. I still had the same noise. Try this out went you get a chance. Have someone drive your truck and you put your ear to the tranny inside the of the cab. You will hear it coming out of your tranny. What fixed it for me was to drop the tranny pan and clean the magnet and change the filter. Do not flush the tranny it will still make the noise after you flush it. I think it has something to do with all the metal shaving on the magnet. Just put your ear to the tranny you will hear the noise only when the truck is in gear and moving. Good luck Ben

There is a high pitched noise due to low ambient tempatures. Fixes range from alty change to serp belt change to pcv....
