engine oil on spark plugs

97 V6 55k miles
I got tired of 11-12 mpg and replaced all spark plugs. The tips were clean but the other end - wire connection end- was rusting. The threads were wet with oil on 2 plugs on each side. Where is the oil leak? Valve cover, most likely?

A related question. I bought the vehicle in 2005. I am the second owner. It came with a rebuilt engine. There is a "Ford recycle" tag on the valve cover and another tag at the bottom that reads 1998. Is 98 the year of manufacturing or rebuilding? All I care about is if there is a difference between 97 and 98 engines as far as maintenance goes. For instance, should I buy spark plugs for 97 or 98? Thanks.

They're the same,basically.I use to have a 97 with the 4.2 and bought parts for it sometimes,as a 98.
