What transmission and what axle ratio? (Hint - look at the door jamb sticker if you don't know) Is this city mileage, highway mileage, or mixed?

The 4.9 does not get very good mileage anyway.

My Mountaineer/Explorer with the 5.0 V8 gets 10 mpg on a good day in the city & all the way up to 15 on the highway. I would say that you are in range. You could think of tuning it up. New plugs & wires. Replace the transmission & differential fluids with high grade synthetics like Royal Purple or Lucas Oil. Go with a lighter grade synthetic motor oil. K&N drop in filter or even a cold air intake. Replace your OEM muffler/exhaust with a Magnaflow. Electric fans. Underdrive pulley. Trans cooler. All the mods that have already been mentioned. But don't look for astronomical gains. If you pick up a few, 2 or 3 mpg, then consider yourself good. That is already better than a 10% fuel savings.
