Iv herd that there not top notch but would the size of the engine compare to the size of tranny , like a (5.0) to a (4.9) . i have a 4.9. i have serviced this trannsmission 3 times in the last 3 years and am getting fed up with it , is there any upgrades that can be taken or any swaps that i can do . Wheres the stamp on the trannsmission that tells me what it is. Thanks . Jr

Look on the door jamb and get the trans code off the sticker, then look at the sticky thread in the Transmissions forum. If it's a 5 speed, I'm 99% sure it's a M5OD.
The Mazda M5OD is not that bad, it's also used on the 5.0 and 4.6 V8's and 4.2 V6's. If yours keeps breaking, you are probably abusing it.

I agree with the rest of them that if its a 5 speed manual then its got to be the Mazda M5OD. Its a good tranny for the power these engines produce. It is dependable even with the 4.6 V8. If your going through that tranny once a year it must be driver or just really heavy use. I would also like to know if there is a swap, possibly a 6 speed.
I had a buddy that had a ranger 4x4 4.0 V6 M5OD "booney basher" and his lasted longer than that. He drove it as hard as he could. Grinding gears and dropping the clutch from 5k rpm at every stop sign/light. It was a cheap truck and it had 250,000+ miles, but it put up with the abuse.

The ZF5 bolts up to manual 5.4's in SD's, and if it bolts up to a 4.2 then 5.4's and 4.2's can swap trannys. I think the GT500's have a T56. They have 5.4's, so a 4.2 can have a T56?...Correct?

If you find a T56 with a Windsor-patterned bell on it, you're good to go. I don't really think a trans with a 2.66 first gear is the way to go on a truck, but that's just me. If you found one with the proper shifter mount (mid-shift, I believe), then that's great.
The ZF5/6 behind a modular isn't going behind a 4.2L. Find an older ZF5 behind a 5.0/5.8L and you're good. Then again, I've tried to shift one behind a 7.3L...that wasn't so fun as I was waaaay more use to the Mazda in my old Ranger.
