98 F-150 4.2l
Symptoms:
1. No power up very slight inclines. High rpms and no speed gain.
2. Very erratic idle in park and drive. The tach will fall off to zero rpm, the dashboard lights up as if just starting it, all power is lost for a split second. After this it tries to return to the original rpms and may end up cycling several times and may happen 5-6 times per minute or not at all in 20 miles. Seems to happen more frequently when the A/C and lights are on but is not isolated to those and when the ambient temperatures are below 70f. Gas mileage has dropped from 17 to 12 mpg's and no tc's have appeared.
Research on this site told me it was a vacuum leak.
The rubber elbow under the front of the intake plenum that leads to the PVC valve was bad. I heard about another elbow on the back right side but never could find it and the problem did not remedy when the elbow was replaced.
Most of the readily accessible vacuum lines have been replaced and over the weekend I replaced the intake plenum and manifold gasket. All of this corrected #1.
I am at a complete loss with #2. PLEASE HELP
UPDATE
I paid $95.00 to have it analized. The mechanic found a loose connection from the 175 amp power fuses on the firewall. The two large gage wires join on the right side of the starter solenoid. He was very displeased when I told him I did not want the solenoid replaced for $225.00. After my truck was removed from the work bay I pulled my sockets out and tightened it. Everything is great.
