f-150 4.2l to 4.6l swap

f-150 4.2l to 4.6l swap

here's the deal. i found a mustang gt 4.6l for cheap, know exactly what to do with it, but dont know if the tranny-back in my 4.2l can handle it. does anyone else know? also, could i use my alt. starter, and all that good stuff on the 4.6l?

and if not a swap, what is a list of parts i can buy for my 4.2l engine to make it faster. there's the v-2 vortec supercharger, but i dont want to spend that much, i cant find a good intake manifold, throttle body, heads....

Honestly, it's too much work and $$$$$ man. Many of us with a V-6 have pondered the posibility of swappingout the v6 for a v8. Long story short, it would be better to just purchase a truck with a v8 if that's what you really want.

Personally... I'd do a 5.4l V8 OR 6.8l V10 swap if I had the $$$ to waste... if you could get your hands on a 5.4l from a F150, you could just swap the wiring harness and computer and you'd be all set. All you'd need to do is reprogram the Motorola ECU for a stickshift, which can be done. Believe it or not, I was looking into the '07's with the ECU and they use the same model ECU across the board. So effectively, if you can find someone with a Ford programmer, then you can get it to work with the stick shift. However, another conclusion that I brought up is the following... If you've got an engine and 6 speed manual out of a super duty, you can get it to work 100%. All you might need would be a new gauge cluster... but that's not a problem either.

If you want the EASIEST way out, I'd say just find a SD 5.4l or 6.8l with a 6 speed, and rip it out. But before you go doing that... make sure it is 2wd! Which might be hard to find... who knows... but ideally, if you can get your hands on a SD 5.4l with a manual 2wd tranny, and gauge cluster, you wouldn't need to do ANY programming at all. HOWEVER, you still need to somehow mount that 6 speed manual... so some cab cutting my be a small issue... but I've seen some pretty good jobs out there. But, it WILL work and would be one heck of a F150.

alright, thanks for the help guys. parts are so hard to find for the 4.2l, i figured it would be easy, but i hadn't looked to find parts for the 4.2 before i got the truck. what performance mods could i get for this truck that ya'll know of? i cant find heads, selection for headers and exhaust is limited, cant find throttle bodies, intake manifolds, etc. if ya'll know of any websites that sell those parts for the 4.2l, it would help alot. thanks..

Check out http://www.v6f150.com/, there is some good information that deals specifically with our V6 F-150's. As far as something that is non-bolt on, I'd recommend checking into custom tuning. I have the XCAL2 for mine, along with gears and an intake, I'm probably up there in HP ratings with stock 4.6 V-8's, hell, maybe even the 5.4 stock. Custom tuning really made my truck fun to drive.

lots of company's make parts for the 4.2L. try gibson for the exhaust and headers... i believe that airrade(or however you spell it) makes a throttle body and i know they for sure make an intake system. try 4wheelparts.com they seem to have a decent selection.

oh by they way i put the gibson dual extreme exhaust on my 2002 4.2L and it sounds way bitchin and i can feel a bit more power.

A 4.6L doesnt have much more get up and go than the 4.2L especially when you consider the amount of money it would take.

K&N also makes a cold air intake for the 4.2L
