Squeal from engine with A/C on

Hey everyone. Well i have a 1999 F-150 4.2 V6. When I turn the A/C on or the fan, the engine makes a squeal sound. I turn it off and it goes away. I am assuming there is something wrong with the A/C so would it just be easiest to get it checked out? Thanks for any help.

could also possibly be a loose belt??? When the AC kicks on it pulls on the belt harder and squeaks???

Just a thought

Sounds like it's your Serpentine belt. I'd go to the closest auto parts store and get some serpentine belt lubricant, that may take care of the problem. Other wise it may be time for a new belt all together.

It could also be the pully on the a/c.

Belt its the cheaper of the two possibilities. And if the belt isnt bad, you can use the old one as a spare which is never a bad idea to have. Could be the clutch on the compressor, or could be one of the other pullies like the idler or tensioner, and its showing up from the extra stress of the a/c. Best way is either use chassis ears, (stethescope with a large nail-type thing on it) to pinpoint the noise, or have someone do it for you.

I had a minor squeal from my A/C on my '99... dealer told me it was normal (the same dealer that convinced me that I DIDN'T need a new friction plate)...

My '07 just makes weird clunks... but now it's getting much quieter. I hardly ever use my A/C.
