Superchips 1714...WHAT IS THE DEAL?
Superchips 1714...WHAT IS THE DEAL?
2004 4.2L
So a guy at work got this thing on my recommendation and says the book and Superchips both say that the "Performance" tune DOES NOT require 91/93 octane, that you are suppose to run 87 still. He just spoke with them again and they stated you'll make less power in 91+ octane. WTF...obviously something ain't right here. When he runs the Performance tune, the truck pings. I told him to just run the 91+ octane regardless, but he's not buying it. What is the deal?

i have the 1715 model for my truck.. and i dont know about his.. but with mine it tells you as your progrsmming it nto either performance or towing mode to have at least 91 minumum octane... otherwise it can dmage the engine.... if he doesnt want to believe. you.. maybe hell say i should have listened to you when his truck breaks down and you have to go pick him up... you can only help a person soo much.. the rest they have to figure out for themselves.... good luck
Performance tunes use 91+ octane. Plain and simple. Tell your friend to give Mike Troyer at Troyer Performance a call if he doesn't believe it. Mike specializes in Super Chips for F150's. Here's the link to the website.http://www.troyerperformance.com/. The phone # for Troyer Performance is (540) 965-7123. You might get someone else besides Mike on the phone, but everyone who works there is very knowledgeable and can answer, or get you an answer to any question.
He supposedly got Mike T. on the phone about 2-3 months ago and he told him it didn't call for 91+ octane, but if it pinged to use the higher octane, but that something else had to be wrong because the knock sensor would have prevented the pinging to begin with. Don't know if I buy it, but whatever. He still says Superchips and the manual both say it only requires 87 octane. I told him that it would simply be a "tranny tune" then so he asked this very question and supposedly they said, no it adds timing too, so he asked how they could do that w/o requiring higher octane and the guy said he didn't know because he isn't an "engineer". Thanks for your time guys.
Hes right.
I got the 1714 for my 4.2 I used 87 octane and it pinged like hell.
I have to use 91 octane.
It states in the book " the "Performance" tune for the 4.2 DOES NOT require 91/93 octane"
But I have to use it....... The book is wrong.

Well, it still works. You just have to buy the higher octane.
But yea,
I cant figure out why they made an exception for the 4.2 using hi-octane fuel in the manual when it obviously needs it.

He definitely needs to run 91/93 for the Performance/Tow Tunes..... I messed around with mine when I bought it and ran the "perf" tune on 89. I figured WTH kind of difference would "2 octane points" make. My motor would ping it's butt off under hard WOT... I only did it once, and pulled right over to adjust the settings back down to the 87Tune... the sound alone scared the crap out of me!!
The man needs to run 91+ or he'll tear the motor up, and besides that he's not getting all the "HP/TRQ" out of that motor until he does switch to 91+
