Anyway my question is , Im about to do the air cleaner mod , most likely tommorow.
Which K&N filter should I get? the standard replace ment or is there a special cold air intake one?
I have a 1998 f-150 4.2 L v6.

I would skip the chopped air box mod, and get this. http://digitalmarket.f150online.com/...cat=161&page=1 The MAC intake for the 4.2L is a good quality air intake kit for relatively less money than the competitors. You can feel the power gains alot better than just doing the air box mod. Mostly from 2800 rpms on up. It's a worthwhile mod that won't break the bank in my opinion. A good free flowing exhaust compliments the MAC air intake very well. I've got it, and I love it.

 

i would spend some time getting to know your truck and then if you're comfortable with your skills i'd make my own cold air intake. it will save you tons of money over buying one for very similar results. can get 3" 90deg rubber bend from lowe's for like $10, 3" rubber coupler $10, 3" pvc pipe $10, and clamp on K&N like $40-50...saves you almost $80 over a MAC which is one of the least expensive. i do agree on not wasting time on the air box mod, and going with a good exhaust will put a smile on your face too.

 

this may be a stupid question, but i'd like to do the very same thing... i can see the setup you have looks pretty slick, but my main concern is the change in gas mileage... is it better, worse, or the same...? I don't mind spending $150 or so on an intake like this, but if makes my gas mileage suffer, then it isn't worth it to me... but i'd like to know nonetheless... thanks...

 

I have a 4.6L, but the change in mileage should be about the same with all intakes so I'll go ahead and post it here. I installed my S&B (very similar to Volant) after I installed the Magnaflow. I was getting about the same mileage that I got with just the exhaust installed, which was less than stock. If I drive like I should and keep it around 70-75 I can get 20.2 mpgs all day long. If the rumble and slight vibration of the intake mixed with the rumble of the pipes and I accelerate hard often, I get between 15-17

 

Gas milage is definatlely better with the air intake. Now it's even better with the new Magnaflow si/do exhaust with 2.25" pipes and 3.5" x 18" stainless tips I just had installed. That is if I keep my foot out of it. That's hard to do because when I stomp the go pedal, all I can hear is a combination of my Mac Intake and my 18" Magnaflow muffler making the sweetest performance sound that's ever came from my truck.

I'd say I get about 1.5 to 2 mpg more with the intake/exhaust combo. I'll track my milage next week and you give an update on my mpg's.
