98 F150 4.2 V6 Idle problem
98 F150 4.2 V6 Idle problem
I have been reading this forum to try and solve a problem with my daughters truck. The truck will idle and run pretty good when it is cold but after it warms up it idles very rough and will die at a stop light. I have replaced the plugs and wires and used 3M throttle body cleaner on the throttle body and the IAC but nothing seems to help. If I put the truck back in park the idle picks up and smooths out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Change Engine Gaskets Now!!!
Hi -
The V6 engines that year have bad gaskets but Ford hides this fact, whats probably happening is that coolant is seeping into the cylinders overnight and burns off when you first start it causing the rough idle. If you don't replace them soon your engine will hydro-lock and self destruct, I learned this the hard way. About $1200.00 for the gasket job.
It will cost $6100.00 installed for a new engine (I am selling my truck for parts instead of putting those kinds of bucks into it)

rough idle / hesitation
Hey everyone.
Going to add my question in here as well. I seem to be having an issue that occasionaly.. seems to happen more often when I am on a sligh incline, that I have a bad hesitation when I step on the gas and it wants to cut off. Aside from that... There are times that my idle seems really rought and sputtery.. (yes thats a red neck word). I rev up the idle a little and it seems to go away, but what ever it is wants to cut off the motor.. but only once in a while. I want it to have a nice rumble to it.. but it sounds like it gasping for it last breath rather than laying in wait.

Wrong. The problem was timing chain cover gaskets, not head gaskets. Also, there was a problem with intake mnaifold gaskets but being a 1998 those problems were fixed. These problems plagued 1997-early 1998 (March 1998 or older build date). I would lean towards MAF or vaccum leak. Have any codes?
