A chip may increase the performance; but, it is better used in conjunction with other intake/exhaust mods. Keep in mind that you'll need to use premium fuel for the chip to be optimized. You probably won't get any big increase in mileage since more power usually equates to more fuel being used - its just used more efficiently...
Stock HP on the 4.2 is around 200 - 205 HP, depending on year.
Its a 4500 lb truck. It will never be able to pin you to the seat when accellerating.
Good Luck!
It makes you think, why did Ford put a V-6 in the F150, it makes less power then the V-8, use the same amount of gas, or some times even more gas. When this motor dies in my truck I'm putting a 4.6L V-8 in it.
The V-8 isn't really much better off the line - but it works less hard throughout the powerband. The V6 will get much better mileage at 60-70 mph than the V8s do. Basically, you need to find the optimal speed for your engine and gearing.
I love my truck, but it drives me nuts that it needs to kick down to 3rd every time I hit a slight hill at highway speeds. If I ever replace the rear gears, I'm going to 4.10s (have 3.31 now). I don't think I'd give up any mileage for my driving style, but would get better powerband characteristics.

Hey members I'm new to F-150online, but I'm also a member on *********** forum, and have been for a good lil while now. I don't know wut's wrong with ur trucks and getting bad gas mileage, but i got a 2000 F 150 V6 5 speed, and the mods i have are K&N FIPK kit, gibson headers, gibson super truck exhaust, 4.10 gears, 225/60/16 tires by Fuzion and thier Z rated tires, and a SCT custom tuned chip and i average about 450 miles to a tank of gas, so i don't know wut's wrong, or y yaw r gettin bad mpg. if i put my foot in it though i only get about 275-300 miles to a tank of gas.
<<450 miles to a tank of gas>>
?? What is a 'tank of gas'?
If you have a 25 gallon tank, your mileage might be pretty good - how much fuel did you put in it? If your truck is a long bed (with a 35 gallon tank), then your mileage is pretty much the same as ours.
You can't say you're getting good mileage unless you do the math...

This subject always amazes me because of the wide variety of mileage ranges and opinions that go along with them. I get 19 mpg all summer long; tank after tank; back to back; no "fill" issues. 70 mph, 5 speed, 3.55s, 4x4. I've NEVER had less than 16 mpg under any circumstances; even during Minnesota winters. To tell you the truth, I don't think that I could intentionally get as bad of mileage as reported in some of these posts. I'm not being critical of anyone. I just don't understand how there can be such drastic differences.
I have a 22 gallon tank and if u do the math it will come exactly to 20.45 mpg and every time i get gas i fill it up and i don't fill up until it is siitin on the E for empty every time. plus i think i get pretty good gas mileage considerin that i have to run nuthin but 91-93 octane gas. and with gas prices being so high these days, i think that is pretty damn good and it saves me money on gas here cuz 91-93 octane is $2.40 a gallon herre.

I have a 97 f-150 4.2l v6 5spd with billet exhaust and 108k. The only position my gas pedal is ever in is on the floor and I get 17-18 mpg over the last 75k that I have kept track of. I do run 89 octane, so that may be a small factor. I agree the 4.2l is a little under powered, but it does seem to love 80-85 mph.

When calculating my gas mileage I get different readings than the on-board computer by as much as 1MPG. On my last refill, the computer showed 19.7 MPG and when I did the math via calculator (miles/gallons) it came up as 18.7. Why the disparity??
I had a 97 f-150 long box reg cab 4x4 with a 4.2 and 5sp manual, 355 LTD slip, I don't rember the tank size...I now have a 04 f-150 reg cab 4x4 long box with a 3v5.4 automatic ( wished for a 5sp )and 355 LTd slip, the 97 was bought used, the 04 new with a 135 lt tank, gets' the same if not better millage than the old 97 I can't prove it, but I reason my 04 get's close to if not better millage than the 97.
on a 135 lt tank I average 600 km in city driving, highway is good for 875 km 110 km to 120 km- 65 to 70 mph- with the 04, my statement is un scientific betwean the 97 and 04, the 04 is brand new, the 97 is burried some where in a wrecking yard by now, the 97 was a great truck, whished I bought that one new and I liked it more than my 04...( allmost a year with no warrenty claims Yay! )
Millage is not a canadian term....just a typo !! Mileage.
