I've read a lot of posts about cleaning the EGR ports in 97-98 4.2 engines, dirty oners causing misfires or loss of power.

Can anyone give some information on location of the ports, and a good procedure to clean them? Or is this something a mechanic should do?

Cleaning the egr ports on the 4.2 require removing the upper intake manifold. Unless you are having a problem or the CEL comes on with a definitive code, don't bother.
