Hydro lock 97 4.2
Hydro lock 97 4.2
Having a bad Ford day and need some advice. I’m the original owner 97 F 150 4.2 V six.
Had a Hydro-lock but was to dumb to realize it. I thought it was a starter problem and backed up the motor using a socket on the lower pulley. I heard a bang when it did start and saw the big cloud out the tail pipe. It clacked like it had a noisy lifter and as I was a long way from home on vacation in Calgary headed home to Winnipeg. The oil looked good Temperature was fine, oil pressure normal, gas mileage the same as the trip out and other than that paint-can noise I made it home OK. 13 hundred Km at 110 K .The trucks eight years old with only 103000 Kilometers not miles on it. The clacking is not any worse now than when I left Calgary
What have I done? What is that clacking noise? How long can I drive it like that?
My antifreeze was down a little when I arrived in Calgary.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Well, don't have real good news for you. First, your intake gaskets are the most likely culprit for the coolant in the cylinder. Second, the loud noise when it started was probably the rod bending when the piston hit the coolant. Liquid does not compress. Your ticking problem is most likely the piston contacting the rod, or the rod contacting the crankshaft as the piston moves up and down. Is it running a little rough?

Hey Hodaka, guess what, I just came in from my garage where I pulled a 4.2 out of an E150 with your exact problem. Removed the oil pan and number four connecting rod has a slight S shape and the noise was the top of the rod contacting the crankshaft counterweight. Told the guy I thought I might be able to get away with a new crank(before I pulled it out). Call him tomorrow with some engine prices. There's just too much coolant mixed in with the oil and spread throughout the oil passages to properly clean them without taking the chance that the new oil will take some old oil/coolant to the new bearings and wiping them out.
