What weight oil are you using? What brand oil filter are you using?

I have a 98 also and I'm getting the same thing. But I live in California and it does it when its cold also, around 42 to 50 degrees out. It does it when it's cold and hasn't been started all night or all morning. When the truck is warm or the day is warm out, it doesn't do it. My truck has about 70,000 on it and it runs great. I suspect it might be a fan belt that needs replacing. When it gets cold it gets stiff and when the engine starts you hear that scrape bump sound that it makes.

How many miles does your truck have? Have you replaced your fan belt before?

This just recently started with my truck and this is just a theory I have of what might be causing this sound at cold start up.

What do you think? Mark M

That sounds like the same noise I am hearing. I have about 93000 on my truck. I just recently purchased it in may. All I have done to it is new brakes all around and new rear axel seals.

Could be the starter problem which has plagued some trucks. The starter gear will not retract fast enough when cold and drags the flywheel for a brief second.

FRAM makes Pennzoils oil filters,and if you are familiar with FRAM,you know there anti-drainback valve does not seal correctly,and upon start up your valve train clatters.
This might not be your problem,but I would switch to Motorcraft oil filters if I were you!

The oil you are using is very good oil.I use Motorcraft 5W30 synthetic blend oil and Motorcraft FL-400S oil filters.I get both at Wal-Mart;
Motorcraft 5W30 synthetic blend oil-$1.42 a quart
Motorcraft FL-400S oil filter-$2.77 each
