Unhappy 4.2L GEAR GRINDING INTO 3rd

I have a 2000 4.2L f150. When it's really hot outside it tends to grind gears from 2-3. It does it to when its cold sometimes aswell. I assume the previous owner speed shifted a lot and now Im stuck with the problem. I tried following the H pattern, but it still grinds ( most likely the 3rd gear syncro is a gonner). I just bought this truck and bought the extended warranty. Do you think Ford will cover this problem? Will I have to pay for anything? And how long will this take them to fix?

I've have the same truck but a 99 with the same problems. Sometimes I get grinding going from 5th to 4th but its never as bad. I've been wondering for a long time about what to do as well.

Sorry to hear about your problem, but the 2nd to 3rd grind on the upshift is pretty wide spread on the 5-speed. It usually happens when your on load and you shift into 3rd. I used to wait a little longer than normal for the revs to drop, and that usually prevented the grind into 3rd.

After I got tired of it, I asked my service adviser if there's anything he could do. Since I was out of warranty, but a loyal customer, they decided to give me an "out of warranty adjustment". I paid 1/3rd of the total cost. Ford and the dealership pick up the remaining 2/3rds. Their fix was a whole new tranny, at a cost of $1,500 bucks (I paid $500).

It was worth it though, because I got a new tranny with a 5 year/100K warranty and NO MORE GRINDS EVER! No matter how hard I shift, it doesn't grind. Unlike my old tranny that would grind at least once a day.

Your extended warranty will cover any powertrain associated problem, mainly the engine, tranny, axle, etc. I would get your truck to your service advisor as soon as your ready and I’m sure he’s aware of this problem on the 5-speed no matter what he says! BTW - My truck was also a 2000 4.2L 5-Speed.

Cool, but your extended warranty will cover it.

As for you guys without extended warranties, you may not be out of luck. I was out of warranty, but heard that if your a regular customer with a specific dealership, they will help you out if you ask nicely!

In my case, I have always gotten oil changes from this dealership and they helped me out. If your out of warranty and have a regular dealership, might as well ask for the "out of warranty adjustment", it cant hurt plus you may save some money!

Talked to Ford's service depat. It's Tuesday today and I had to make a "reservation" as they say to stop by next Monday and drop the truck off. I hope they can get my truck back asap, I hate not having it. I guess that's what I get for living in Los Angeles, too many damn cars....to many damn Fords, lol.

My truck has had that 3rd gear grind ever since I bought it new back in 2001. I'd say it's a common problem, since I hear of so many people that have this problem. It happens when you try to shift to fast from 2nd to 3rd gear. Shift it slow, and it usually doesn't grind at all.

Mine was the same way, and only a tranny change made it go away.

This 5-speed 3rd gear grind is a defect in a large batch of those trannys that were made. Ford knows of the problem, but as always will not issue a recall on the matter (i.e. Door Cracks).

My service advisor said that they replace any of the 5-speeds showing this problem only if its brought up by the customer.

But considering how much we pay for our trucks, we shouldn't have to live with these problems. Once the new tranny was installed, it has worked perfect from day one. I haven't had a grind, no matter how fast I shifted.

Thanks for that last post, that helps me a lot! I can't wait to get a new tranny and be able to shift as fast as I want with-out fearing the horrible gear grind into 3rd!

Mine had a 2-3 grind at about at 20K and a new tranny was put in under warranty. It started again at about 32K and Ford put in a new synchro. At about 50K I noticed the 2-3 shift getting notchy and decided to replace the ATF with Redline MTL.

It took a few thousand miles, but the shifting is greatly improved and the tranny is quieter to boot. Wish I'd done it sooner. Good stuff.

Hmmmm, maybe I should try the Redline MTL? You really noticed a difference Scott D?

I had the same problem with my 2000. It was not caused by speed shifting. mine done it from the day I drove it off of the lot brand new.It didn't matter if you shifted it fast or slow it would do it.Dealership was not able to figure out what was wrong they said it was normal. After fighting with them and ford for a year about it I said screw it and just lived with it. Untli I traded it in in january of 2004

I have had my truck since 4/00 and now have 68000. My truck has done this since I drove it home. I just replace the fluid once a year.

I never even changed fluid i got so mad at the truck all i done was drive it .Change oil and keep it clean and looking good. other than that it was a pretty good truck. I think it had 45,000 mile when i traded it in january. I decided I wanted a van insteadThe van is more practical for me also more luxary in the van. After driving a truck all day I got tired of coming home and still having to drive a truck and shift.
