oil level after changing oil
oil level after changing oil
So after I changed oil and oil filter I checked the oil level and it was low. Before you jump on this let me finish. I double checked the owner's manuel for the proper amount. As I thought it said 6 quarts. I completely drained the oil out of each quart bottle. Then I ran the truck for a minute and let it set for a few minutes before I checked it.
This is the second oil change I have given my truck and it came to the exact same level last time. So I suppose that means I am at least not leaking or burning any oil. The level on the dipstick reads half way up the cross-hatched area. I was always under the assumption that from the bottom to the top of that area was 1 quart- so if it was at the bottom, then you were a quart low. So this time I added an extra half-a-quart.
Is this normal for a 2001 XLT ?

if its in the cross hatched area your good. ford has recently changed their way of marking the sticks in the old days it would got to the top line that was full.
now days it seems like it is in the middle of the cross hatched area. the top line is now the do not fill past this line mark.
i have a 97 it had the cable dipstick it would read at the top line with 6 quarts. i then bent the tube and broke the cable putting headers in had to replace with the new style stick it now shows half way between cross hatched area with 6 quarts.
if owners manual says 6 quarts thats what i would use.

Mr_Bentwrench is 100% right.
This is what I found out regarding the oil capacity of our trucks. The manual says 6 quarts because that brings you up to the middle mark on the dipstick.
Well unlike other some other vehicles, the middle mark or anywhere in between the high & low marks on the F150 dipsticks are considered full. In fact the manual says you should only add oil if it gets at or below the low mark, and only add enough to get it between the high & low marks, not necessarily to add up to the high mark.
So yes, 6 qts will give you the recommended amount of oil right around the middle of your dipstick. If your old school, and can't live with the oil not right up to the max line, than add about another 1/2 qt. BUT DO NOT OVER FILL!!!
