Exhaust

What is a good exhaust for the 4.2 V6? I have a pure stock truck right now and I want it to sound great, (i can deal with some cabin noise) and I want some performance. Let me know some recommendations or opinions on what I should do.
Thanks!

I went with a 2.5 " single in /single out flowmaster 40 series. It sounds much deeper now and I'm pretty happy with it. I orderd a super chip and airforce 1 intake kit today. The airforce 1 is supposed to really help improve the way it sounds as well as add a few ponies to the rear wheels. If I were to do it over , I might go with the Magnaflow single in duel out as it is really supposed to sound good on the 4.2 . Good luck with what ever you decide on . Charlie

Thats exactly the answer I was looking for. Thanks a lot man. I went to the Magnaflow site and I couldnt find one for the 4.2. Does it matter? Yes, I was thinking along the lines of a single in, dual out exhaust. Do you think I should order online then give it to a shop to install or should I just go through the shop? Where can I find the proper Magnaflow for the 4.2? Thanks again!

I'm in the same situation. My dad is giving me his '99 XL Sport (4.2, manual 4-speed+OD) in a few months when I get my license(don't think of me as just some stupid teen, cars are my life). I've been searching and searching for parts for the 4.2 and I can't find anything. I was thinking I'd have to get a muffler shop just make me one, but I wanted mandrel bends...

I'm just looking for a little more performance, but more for sound. There isn't a whole lot I can do to make the 4.2 fast to my knowledge. Even if you could, I doubt I could afford it. Anyways, I just want to sound and look good, but not too flashy.

Are there any side-exit kits, like the Lightning?

Well I know where you can get a Magnaflow for your 4.2 . They have them at the place I got my Chip and Airforce one. As a matter of fact they sell a package deal with it included. If I had not already done my exhaust I belive I would have bought that package. Check out this link and good luck ! Charlie

I have a 99 regular cab F-150 with the 4.2 motor and i put the 40 series flowmaster single inlet and dual outlet on my truck. It sounds good. It is not too loud but it has a good tone. The only thing about putting exhaust on a V-6 is that it isn't as deep as a V-8.

Just goto a local muffler shop (not a chain)(usually the crappiest looking ones do the best and cheapest work). Tell them what you want and they will tell you what will work the best. They have the pips to make it exit however you want, and if they dont have the muffler you want then that would be the only thing I would order. Usually you can pay cash and that helps to keep the price down. I paid 120 (or was it 220...I think it was 120 but I rember at the time I got a really good deal) for mine installed, and I got a magnaflwo single in dual out. Its not real louf but you can hear it once you get on it, and it did get deeper when I hacked the airbox apart.
