Question changing the oil

hey guys, my dad just got a 2002 f-150 xl supercab today. he is a handyman and wanted something a little bigger than his 2001 ranger. the f-150 is pretty stripped down, 5-spd, a/c and a tape player. it has about 16k miles and i was looking thru the maunual and noticed it said to use 5w20 oil. i've searched lots of old posts about oil in the v6's but still wanted to ask about it. we live in san diego so the climate is quite mild year around. should i just stick with the 5w20 or is there a better weight i should purchase? thanks for your help.

You can use 5W-20 or 5W-30, for a 2002 the manual recommends 5W-20, so does mine for my 2001 but I have always used 5W-30 just like my Ford dealer does.

If your going to be doing any hard driving and/or towing I would go with the 5W-30, that is me.

No, you do not have to worry about warranty concerns because there are a lot of dealers that do not use the 5W-20 but prefer the 5W-30. They represent Ford, so no problem.

Best bet call some dealers in your area and ask for their input.

Either one will work fine for your engine. The 5w-20 meets a higher specification than the 5w-30, and is at the high end of the viscosity range for a 20w. The 5w-30 has been used for years.

I had one of those trucks last year, and it is the easiest vehicle I've changed the oil on.

If you want to learn more about the 5w-20 do a search on user labnerd and read the oil threads.

I use 5w20 because I get better gas mileage with it, and I live in New Orleans.
