I don't remember the exact miles per tank, but my truck gets about 12-13 mpg around town and 20 on the interstate.

I modified my airbox by taking off the nozzle and bolting the part of the housing that was left to the original bracket. Then I looked for something that was the right size to clamp into the originaql clamp and still fit around the filter snugly enough to hold it. I used the aluminum shade from a heatlamp. The outside edge was just the right size for the clamp and I cut the inside out to the right size to fit around the K&N filter. Works perfectly!!

Rick.Seattle: well basically oil: 5w20 GTX,
plugs: Auto lite platnium, and the fuel is from the local texaco. I think part of it is also during the week on my way to work in the mornings it is pretty common to have 20kt winds pushing me and in the afternoon the wind dies down so that might help me out a littel. Other than that there is nothing different about my truck.

I just recently did a bit of just hiway driving. Traveled at average of 75-80 mph. Got 20+ mpg. Now I need some cash for a new muffler.

You guys are going to make me cry. I am only get 12-14 MPG with a stock 1998 4X4 4.2 and 5-spd. I haven't done any mods (besides a K&N filter), YET. But after reading some of the improvements you guys have come up with, I may try them.
I want to try that air box mod, how much does it help?

Where do I start? What do you reccomend?

I'd go with exhaust right after the intake. That should help a little, sounds great too..

I think it WAY more about how you drive than any modifications you make. My truck is box stock and consistently gets 19 to 20 mpg in mixed driving. It is a 4.2 Reg Cab Long Box 4x4 5speed 17" wheels 3.55 gears.

And changing your driving style is FREE . . .
