Question Ordering new truck

Hi

I priced out new truck online. Shows two prices..."Invoice" and "MSRP"

Naturally im looking at the "Invoice"price. I also recall sometime ago the sales guy i was talking to did a similiar print out.

Let's say i order truck from factory the way i want it. Not a lease and no trade in.

So....whats a good starting point? Offer only invoice and see what happens? Or less and see what happens? Or ???

How did you go about doing it? Considering i think the dealer is looking at what we look at online. Tks. for advice/tips etc.

Geez...no replies

Ok..i just answered one of my questions. Was told by local dealer to price one out on the internet. So, they are looking at same prices. I have done that.

They may have what im looking for on lot...if not...then it may end up coming from the factory? Either way...i'll have some figures to work with.

Hasnt anyone here done this? I know new trucks are expensive.. surely someone here has done "price out" before going to dealer? Seems to me it would be same for a new car.

TIA.....OT

I haven't ever ordered a vehicle, so can't help you there. However, I would think if you are looking at one on the lot, then invoice price is a good starting point. I know that, regardless of what they tell you, they will still make money selling it at invoice. If you don't want to burn your bridges at the dealership, and don't really feel like driving a hard bargain, there are places that routinely sell vehicles for $300 (or less) above invoice, no haggles. In fact, somewhere on the east coast (I think) there is a dealership whose claim to fame is "$98 over invoice" if I recall correctly.

Good luck!
Jeff

Haggle your A$$ off.

I don't know what the market is like out there, but in the D.C. Metro area, it is a real buyers market. Your dealer can check other dealers for the truck you're looking for if he doesn't have it. Dealerships do DX's (Dealer Exchange)all the time. I was looking for a Supercab last month and found one that stickered at $33,555. After telling the salesman that $4,000 off isn't even close to what I was willing to pay, I left. Five days later he calls me w/ a price of $25,998. Told him OK, until I sat in the backseat. Supercab back seats are complete crap, great for holding groceries, but definitely not made for people to sit on. I ended up w/ a S'crew instead. Got it for $26,500 (About $1,400 below invoice). Make 'em squirm Old Timer, never ever say yes on the first visit. Be sure to check out a few pricing services on the net as well.

Old Timer,
The pin #/X Plan is a number that you can get from someone who works at ford and gets you a good price without fighting with the dealers. If you know anyone who works for Ford they may be able to get you a pin number and save you from hassleing with the dealers. I have always used it as my father works at ford and it took about $5000. off the price of my 98 when I bought it. Don't recall what it took off of my wifes explorer. Dealers usually like it as they get their commision off of the sticker price even though you didn't pay that much.

No problem OT that's what the boards are here for. I know what you mean about ordering the next one, I have a very specific idea in my head as to what I want and do not want on my next truck and if it's not exactly like I want it, no deal. I doubt I will be buying a new one at least until the second model year of the new trucks, I like to give them a year or so to get the bugs out. I did that with my current truck and so far so good few problems and no recalls to date.

Goodluck

OT,
the best price i have seen to date is carsdirect.com or the x-plan

just print the page at the carsdirect.com site with all your options selected take that to the dealer and they usually will try to beat that price (even $50 is $50). or just buy it from carsdirect.com
i heard allot of good review about the buying process (my freind used it)

and enjoy the truck!!

by the way there is a additional 1000 bonus going on till 1/02/03
so that's 3000 total in rebates and stuff. i don't know if it will go any higher (i got mine at 2000 rebate, a month ago.. i couldn't wait)

OT - check with your employer's HR department (if you aren't self employed). Some companies have some sort of arrangement with Ford where they offer all of their employees X Plan eligibility. Also, if you belong to any other organizations you might check with them - I think my dad got X Plan from VFW or something like that.

I ordered a 2000 F-250 Super Duty, 4x4,ORP, V-10, SC,LB, Lariat. I also ordered a ton of accessories from Ford. I had built one on the Ford site, and had an idea in my head what my truck should cost when I went to the dealer. Out the door, with all my accessories installed (fog lights, front grille guard, wood grained dash, power sliding rear window, bed liner, window weather guards for ALL windows.) I got my truck for $37,000. (I don't have the papers in front of me with the exact cost.) I hope this helps! I had a GREAT dealer! I knew EXCATLY what I wanted when I walked in. I KNOW that helped. But, I also had a fantastic dealer and salesman. Does this help?

The rule on invoice is simple. The dealer can sell you a truck at invoice and still make money. The dealer also knows that anyone who will pay $x for a new truck will also pay $X + $200 for the same truck.

The dealer makes $200 just for asking.

That is why some people ask for $200 under invoice. It also depends on the sales manager and/or salesperson. They may determine that the experience of conducting a sale there is worth $1000 and not sell below $1000 over invoice.

It also depends on the vehicle. If the vehicle is fresh on the lot, optioned to sell, and people are talking numbers, the price goes up.

It also depends on the day of the month. Stop in on Saturday the 31st an hour before closing and offer $500 under invoice on a truck that has been sitting for a few months and see what they say.

Now if you are ordering a truck it is a whole new ballgame. Expect to pay more. You are better off to figure out what you want, and find a truck with more options, because you can get that one for less money. The tough part if finding the option combo in your number one color choice.

Hi

Tks. for all the info. and updates.

Whats happening with me. I finally figured out what i need. Truck and options. Priced it out online.

One dealer quote so far...he starts with MSRP...then ends up with a figure between invoice/MSRP. Havent sat down and got bottom line price, yet! Yes, he has same price list as i do. Factory order.

Getting prices from two more dealers.

Ill update outcome later.
