Thumbs up Buy Under Invoice

Guys if you aren't getting your truck at invoice or below then you need to try harder. I bought my last two trucks (98 F150 XLT and 2000 F150 Lariat) at $300 and $350 under invoice and recent shopping for another one for my son has several dealers bidding at $500 under invoice. The secret in a nut shell is shop over the phone. Sure, go to the dealers and window shop, decide exactly what you want, but when its time to buy, get on the phone and talk to the sales manager, or even the General manager. Cut through all the haggling and tell him what you want and that you can get it at another dealer at $300 under invoice, and what can he do, etc. This works every time and not only for trucks. Of course the more knowledgeable you are the better. Know your truck, options, pricing, financing options, trade in value, etc. Remember a great price and bad financing means the dealer still took you to the cleaners. My two truckes took me less than an hour to pick up at the dealer's, since the whole deal was done over the phone. Good luck!

LarryS...
You've got the right idea...on the phone or in the dealership. Know what you want and know what you're willing to pay..then tell them!!

Don't ever ASK them for a price, guys!!!! Tell them !!!!

Last time, rather than deal on the phone as I had for my two prior vehicles, I went to the dealer, told them I had 45 minutes to close the deal for "xx" dollars, and asked, "yes or no ?, and, if you're not the person who can answer my question, then bring to the guy who can". Deal closed at that price, but took 60 minutes.....

ALWAYS USE CREDIT CARD FOR DOWNPAYMENT OR DEPOSIT !!!!!!!

I agree. I just ordered a Supercrew and the deal was extremely easy because I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to pay. I got quotes from many dealers in the area and several from as far away as 150 miles to get an idea of what kind of price I could get (all via e-mail). Then I took my deal to the dealer down the street. They knew that if they didn't give me the deal I wanted I would go straight to the lowest bidder. One things for sure, if not for this site I never would have known what I wanted or how to get it at a good price. So thanks to everyone out there.

Be sure to negotiate the extended warranty (if you opt for one). Most dealers mark up the warranty anywhere from 20 to 40 percent!

Be careful when buying aftermarket items as well. If you do not know the pricing and you get the truck at or below invoice they will try to make it up in the accessories. You can always call the parts dept and ask how much something is from them, or shop around aftermarket shops.

In the F&I dept (financing) be sure to try to get their buy rate as your intrest rate, or better yet if there are no F&I incentives get a loan direct from a bank or credit union.

Just my $0.02

Talking

i agree with the previous post about under invoice and using e mail. I am stationed overseas and returning to the states. e mail and phone is the only means available to me for contacting the dealers. I requested several quotes from dealers in East Texas. I researched their inventory using the dealer's homepages and requested quotes on specific VIN numbers. I received several quotes all were reasonable, but on e was written professionally and was the lowest. I was quoted a price of $24,685+ttl on a F-150 Supercab Lariat, 5.4L V8, Tow Package, Two tone paint. This is before the $1,000 rebate and $400 college grad rebate. After rebates, tt+l, i will pay $24,987 to drive it off. I will test drive it and if I like it will buy it the 9th when I return to the states. Feel this is a good deal comparing prices on edmund's and kelley's. Tell me what you folks think.

Sorry for the delay in reponding....ALWAYS pay downpayment or deposit with credit card because if merchandise or service is not received (if you back out of the deal) or if the merchandise or service is defective, you can return it or repair it elsewhere (proof of defect) and not be liable for payment. Added bonus...credit card company hassles company seeking payment from you, debits their account and makes them prove merchandise or service was received, and received in good order.

When I signed a dealer agreement for a SCrew in December 2000 and found that the vehicle was defective the day of pick-up, I refused to accept delivery. They laughed and said I owned it, come pick it up or they'd have it towed off the lot. Then, when I cancelled my $6500. deposit, called VISA and told them the merchadise was defective and refused, along with a copy of that letter to Ford Motor Credit advising I would not be paying the loan....I got several calls...from the dealer begging me to discuss the situation!!!! Paying by credit card provides LEVERAGE...and that's a good thing!

Or if you are a good customer, you won't have to put anything down. I emailed a listing from the internet of the truck and all the options with the list price. They ordered it and called me when it came in.

MrBill:
I agree with this great strategy. Unfortunately it is why 99% of dealers will not take deposit on a credit card.

btr:
I hope you mean invoice! If you paid list, you were robbed.
