Advise on Trade

I have a 2001 F150 5.4L Auto XLT 4x4 Supercab, stlyeside, offroad, 7700, with cooling package. It had a list of $30,500. I paid $27,300. The truck is mint, with 18,000 miles on the odometer.

I was thinking of trading it in for a new 2003 exactly the same. Any idea of what the delta might be, any incentives out there, etc.

My feeling is that the truck is at its max resell value right now, and new truck deals are a buyers market.

Whats your opinion.

From: the moral high ground
My brother uses his truck in his business and has to trade every two years for tax purposes. If this is your situation then it's a no-brainer.

Otherwise, I don't get it.
You say you have a low mileage mint truck.
You want an identical truck, only two years newer.

Ford (the manufacturer) has 'profit' built into the new truck.
The Dealer will have to make 'something' too.

How do you figure to come out ahead on this?

Unless you paid way too much for the 2001, put no money down, have it in hock up to the headliner and have a buyer for it...

If you wanted something different or if you had problems with the '01, then hey people do that all the time.

But, you won't come out ahead in a strictly financial sense unless you have some tax considerations.

It is a business truck, so I have the tax advantage. It actually makes tax sense to do this, but within limits. I mean if I pay $30K for a new 03, and get $15K on mine, then the tax advantage is overcome by the differential. About $10K difference is where it works.

The reason I want the 03, and not the o4, is that I have a bunch of add ons that I want to take off and move onto the new truck, like a $1000 stereo, $800 Roll top cover, $front deflector, windor deflectors, custom seat covers, etc.

From what I can see the 03 is identical to the 01, so everything should fit, I am not sure about the 04. Of course the main items are the stereo, which will fit anything, but the roll top would be nice, do you think Ford will change the bed dimensions.

Anyone got ideas on the numbers, what I can get on my truck, what to pay for the new, rebates, interest, etc.

I am currently shopping for my first truck and am searching out a Ford f150 exactly like yours. I would expect to be paying 22.5K frm a Ford dealer. Maybe 20k private sale...these trucks are very expensive up here in vermont..so far no deals to be had on used. A 2003 brand new will set you back about almost 28K here in vermont, and that includes a 2K rebate.

According to kbb.com your truck is worth about 17-18k in a trade in. If you want to look for a new truck and do some research check out www.carsdirect.com. Good luck.
