Is the 5 speed crap?
My 96 has the same 5spd(Mazda M5OD) with 104k miles and I'm very pleased with it. I beat the hell out of this truck and tranny and have had no problems what so ever. I think it's a great tranny.
Haven't been on in awhile, but thought I could add to this one. My 2000 is up to 58,000 miles, and other than the drivetrain complaint if i move to 3rd gear a little to fast, no problems. Complain all you want, but until it gives me a problem, it works just fine!
Did you notice any changes with the fluid change? Could you give a brief run down of what needs to be done, and what is needed? Any tips / tricks? I'd like to do mine in a few weeks. Not sure what I want to run though. Some synthetic ATF. Mercon 5 right?

Hey Jackal,
My truck is completely stock with the exception on a K&N air filter I just put on, have all of your performance mods made a big difference? Have they had any affect on your transmission? What was the best mod?
Thanks
O1 XLT Sport,
We have very similar trucks, how do you like yours?

Man, I love every last minute of it. The biggest difference was the Superchip and it took me 2 years in the 99, and 2 years in this one before I would spring for it, and I wish I had done so 4 years ago. Second would be going from 3" single exhaust to single 2 1/2". LOVE IT!!!

It is not to bad if you get one of those plastic hose fitting that screw on to the transmission fluid bottle, I got mine at Auto Zone.
Anyway, with your truck level, I did NOT have mine on any jacks, so if it is level you just fill till it begins to leak out the fill hole, like you do with the rear-end.
I think it took me about 15-20 minutes if that. The old fluid looked good, but I still plan on changing the transmission and rear-end fluid every 30,000 miles.
EDIT: I bought my Royal Purple at http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...ctModelId=4881 for about $7 a qt. so total cost for the transmission was about $32.00 pretty cheap insurance. The Royal Purple Max ATF does meet the Ford specs.

I have a 2000 F150 5-Speed. The tranny has always had a problem with the 3rd gear syncro (grinding upshifting from 2nd to 3rd). Also the shifter itself has started to rattle, now with more than 41,000 miles.
My dealer has decided to replace my whole transmission, including a new shifter. Apparently this is the fix my dealer has been doing for trucks with syncro problems.
Even though I'm out of warranty, they "hooked" me up with an after warranty adjustment. I will end up paying about 10% of the repair, while Ford and the dealer pick up the rest. They are doing this because they consider me a good customer since we have several of our cars serviced at this dealership, and we recently bought a new Honda from them (They sell both Fords & Hondas).
I also tried to get them to fix my tranny's 3rd gear grind prior to being out of warranty, but they weren't able to diagnosed the problem until now. I'm sure that particular service record also helped me get the after warranty adjustment too.

I'll never own another ford. I have had chevys and never had them in the shop.I have a 1997 Dodge 3500 1 ton dump truck, with the cumming diesel. In 63,000 miles i replaced the starter,But this truck is used for landscaping. It get stopped and shut down 20-30 times a day.So i think i have been lucky with it. I have had a lot of ford trucks. I have lived in the shop with every one. I can say my v6 get great gas milage and lots of power. But my truck will be a dodge diesel 6speed.

I use to drive dodge trucks for work. They ran like ***** for a long time. They spent plenty of time in the shop. Now we have Fords. They're so much better!
The M5OD is a pos, kind of like the starters, auto transmissions and wireing on the dodge.
