Weak clutch at 38,000???

Weak clutch at 38,000???
I have 38000 on my 97 and it seems like the clutch is getting really weak. When I leave from a stoplight, it seems as thought there is no way to smoothly engage the clutch, because it doesn't grab until the pedal is almost completely released. Is the clutch self-adjusting or is it something that needs to be done by a mech??
