Post Supercrew Tranny Clunk

I have a new S. Crew and have noticed a problem from day one. When driving along when I let off the gas and coast (car in front of me turning) then re-apply the acceleration I get a clunk. Sound like the tranny re-engaging or somthing. Wondering if anyone else had this problem and if they go it fixed. I took to dealer and they said that they "drove similar model made same noises". I nearly broke the service manager's neck. Whe kinda of f**king analysis is that. All it proves is that you have 2 busted *** transmissions on your lot. Man I was pissed. Anyways thanks for any input. Gotta go take something to lower blood pressure.

Hi Jimmar,
I have had the same problem with my 99 xlt 4.6 auto since day 1(now have about 25,500 miles). Have had it to 3 different dealers on 4 different occasions and get the same BS responses. "Normal operating condition""they all do that" etc. Really pisses me off, Ford's customer service sucks IMO. If you come up with a fix I'd really like to hear about it.

I'm gonna fix my service manager's face with a Louisville slugger if he doesn't fix it this time (3rd times a charm). Will keep you posted.

Thanks

Thumbs down

I also am a victim of tranny clunk, 2001 F-150 5.4 4X4 SCAB Flareside. I don't think it's isolated to the SCREW, same conditions here coasting from 45 to 50 and accelerating at 10 to 15 then thunk. I have noticed a change if you are out of overdrive......just an opinion so far, free wheeling after shifting in overdrive at 40 down to a crawl most always generates a clunk....Food for thought, tranny electronically shifts out of overdrive once you accelerate. Anyone else tried this?

thanks CACeeJay for pointing to that thread, I never saw that one(BTW I don't have limited slip), A little additional info the last mechanic I talked to about this problem told me is that he thought it was a computer calibration problem. Meaning that the programmed downshift point for the OD to low downshift is set to low. If it was set 2-300 RPM's higher we would never hear this clunk.(I'm refering to the downshift clunk during coastdown at about 22 MPH.) This does not explain, however, the momentary coast then get back on the gas clunk that we are also getting. I think that this is just part of the **** poor soft shifting programming Ford is putting into these computer controlled transmissions. They should have come up with a fix by now.

My 2001 reg cab 4X4 with a LS and less than 2000 miles is doing it too. I cussed all the way from Maryland down into Virginia tonight. A new nice quiet "built Ford tough" truck shouldnt sound like a poorly maintained rattletrap. Please keep us posted on what you guys find out. thanks

My SCrew does it too, especially coasting and accelerating around corners.

Mine is in the shop today for it. I have already prepared myself for the "normal opertation" excuse. I did get the service writer to ride with me and duplicate the noise though.

I own a 1997 e.c. l.b. 4x4 and have had the
clunk since day one.
We recently had it up on a lift and I noticed that I could turn the drive tire approx. 6" before the drive shaft would move
I am not a mechanic but this seems that this could be the cause of the clunk.
Is there any one out there with a resoloution?
Please help ...

p.s. my truck has done this for 130,000 miles
and has had no serious problems with the clunk.(but I do) PLease e-mail me directly if any answers...

Our first tranny clunked from 2000mi until a new tranny was installed at 23,000mi. 2nd tranny was fairly quiet until 33,000mi, now the clunk is back. The rear end developed a howl @ 26,000mi and a new ring and pinion was installed @ 31,000mi. Along the way I was given a new driveshaft, and had a torque converter shift solenoid installed. Guess what folks..It is normal...I have banged my head with Ford long enough on this issue and have driven enough trucks with the 70 series tranny to believe some of their hype. Mine may be more apparent because I selected the all rubber interior of the XL model and the carpeted series of interiors may do a better job of 'masking' the noise, IMHO If it ain't broke, they won't fix it...... without a lot of persistant work from you. What else are you going to buy anyway? Chevys and GMC are loaded with problems, Dodge does not seem to be any better (may even be worse) Toyota is overpriced and undersized. That is why I still in possession of the first new truck we bought, the 76 Chevy @ 160,000miles and clunk free. (Other than the cab which is almost rusted off!) Maybe they don't make'em like they used to, huh? j.b.

Mines got it too! But I will have to admit that overall this is the best vehicle I have ever had. I drove them all for about a year before I made my purchase. I think every dealer of all brands from all local cities new my name. Overall quality is the best out of the American bunch.

my truck quit clunking! Today I was trying to show a mechanic (friends not a ford guy) and it would not clunk no matter what. I think the warm weather or breakin settled the problem.

How dd you make out? I've got this problem on my Y2K+1 which is easily duplicated. I'm trying to decide whether to worry about it, ot just leave it alone.

It was in the shop for a big bang on hard acceleration and for a wandering front end. They fixed those two issues but said they "forgot" about the thunk. The writer did say that it sounded "normal" but to bring it back to have their tranny guy look into it!

I haven't had an opportunity to but I just got a new job that will allow me a company car - no, I'm not getting rid of the truck - that will give me something to drive besides their Focus comp car.

On a similar note, I was riding with a buddy who drives a Silverado the other day. His truck has 120K miles and does the same thing. I personally don't want my truck acting like an old Chevy so it WILL go back. It is not normal!
