Erratic Shifting

Just got back from a vacation to Pennsylvania towing a 5K lbs travel trailer to PA and back from NH - 430 miles. When towing, turned off the O/D and left the Speed control off. Now the thing is downshifting and can't make up it's mind what gear it wants to be in. I disconnected the batterry to clear the transmission memory, like the owners manual said would happen when I changed battery. It settled down for a while and is now got me seriously concerned. Anyone else have a simmilar problem?
