Question Grinding 5 Speed...

Well, my 1-2 and 2-3 grinding shifts are becoming worse it seems, especially with my dirtbike in the back. It happens between 2K -3K RPM's at least twice a day, and more frequently over 3K. Should I make the dealership aware of this, and how should I go about proving it to them since it's so "hit or miss?"

What is actually happening when you hear and feel the grinding in the stick?

Thanks!!!

It's your syncrhos. Just tell the dealer that you have problems with them and that they need to be addressed. It's a known problem with the 5sp's and my dealer basically told me that he'll see me in another 50-70k.

I had mine replaced in Aug 00 and they are still working rather well, just about 20k on the truck since then.

Do a search for synchros and you'll see that many of us have had the same problem.

Fwiw, my truck was in for about 22 hrs of shop time, plus time to get the parts, so get ready to make some alternate travel arrangements, or get a loaner that you like (ie: not a focus!)

So you are saying that I will have to have my syncros replaced every 50,000 miles?

They just did it about 6,000 miles ago, I figured that it would be done with, This sucks.

PS how's the Amsoil doing?

The Amsoil is great. Let's see if it can keep my synchros from going south.

Surely there are other people that have more miles on them than I did. I don't drive hard, have only pulled a trailer when i moved accross the country 5k kms, and i do some wheeling, but always leave it in 2nd gear low.

Odd eh?

I think this is a hit or miss problem. I haven't had any problems with my 5 spd. I have 30k and it works great. Is this just a luck of the draw problem?
