Question Cooling fan on trans cooler anyone?

Went off-roading this weekend and had to climb 1500' in 1.8 miles before getting to the trail. Air temp was about 85F at the time. My trans temp gauge showed 220F as I neared the top of the hill, probably due to the lack of airflow through the trans cooler. I was thinking about adding a cooling fan to the trans cooler that I could turn on/off with a cab-mounted switch. Has anyone done this? Can anyone recommend a particular brand?

Thanks for any help.

Neal,
to be honest I've never read all the way through your signature before ... but I managed it today ....

PERMA COOL 14"/10" tranny cooler with 10" electric fan, PERMA-COOL external tranny filter
I'll check out their web site but I have a couple of questions.
1. Do you have the fan controlled by a thermostat or an on/off switch?
2. How much "work" is required in attaching the fan/shroud to the trans cooler?
3. Do you recommend upgrading the cooler before attaching the fan or is the stock one sufficient?

Thanks as always,
gah

Cool

HI!... GAH : My tranny cooler fan is operated from a manual lighted switch that I installed into my tranny temp guage, guage pod. The 10 inch electric fan was designed to work with the PERMA-COOL tranny cooler so it bolted right up. The factory cooler in my opinion is junk and that is why I upgraded to the PERMA-COOL. Plus the factory cooler is WAY to small to mount the 10 inch electric fan. Hope this helps you out.

Question

Thanks Neal. Is this setup from Perma-Cool similar to what you have?

#12311

I'm going to look at my cooler tonight to see if the factory mounting locations will work with the Perma-Cool unit. I did notice that the inlet and exit on the Perma-Cool are 90 degrees out of phase with the OEM unit. Was this a problem for you?

Thanks.

Cool

HI!... GAH : That is the exact same set-up that I have on the PERM-COOL site. I totally removed the stock tranny cooler. I mounted my new tranny cooler on the driver's side in front of the rad. It is suspended from two aluminum mounting tabs from the upper rad cradle under the rad front shroud. I then used another long mounting tab to secure the cooler from it's middle to the lower rad cradle. I then re-did all the factory trans lines with RUSSELL -6 stainless steel braided lines and fittings. I have pics, but no way of posting them. Sorry.Hope this helps you out.

Thanks Neal. I'm going to order the model you have from Summit Racing but I won't be using the braided stainless lines ... too expensive and I need the money for other stuff first.

I'm amazed that your truck gets to 60mph in 5.8 seconds WITHOUT a S/C. Incredible!!

You give us all something to aim for, although I'm more interested in setting up a good tow vehicle so I'll be going with 4.10 gears and Gibson exhaust.
