Question Lost 1st & 2nd gears on 5spd man.

All of a sudden my first and second gear stopped engaging. I can move the shifter into position and it even feels like it's engaging but too lightly. All other gears are fine.
This morning first gear grabbed for a few minutes but that was it. It's gone again.
Any idea what's casing this and is it a fairly easy fix??

Thanx, Doug

the dog teeth on the locking collar may be gone. Since both gears are gone you may just have a joint inbetween the shifter and the internal mechinisms that move the locking collar came loose. The latter would be my first thing i would have checked.

I'm hoping for the latter also. Is there a way to get to it without dropping the tranny? I'm gonna try removing the shifter boot but I don't think it will give me enough access to get to the linkage.

Well since you can get into other gears the linkage may be bad inside top in the tranny.

Hey, pull your carpet/rubber mat back which will expose a cover. It is held on by about 10 bolts. Remove this and you can get to the top cover of the tranny. Samething happened to my dad and he fixed his without removing the tranny.

Well.. here's what I've found so far: I removed the boot(s) from the shifter, which is only four screws, exsposing the top of the tranny through a 6" x 8" opening. Not enough to get to the problem which is... the fork that controls 1st & 2nd gear has let loose from the shaft it rides on. It's an easy fix other than the fact that I've got to drop the the tranny to get to it.
Tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) we're diggin' in. I figure as long as we're going to yank the whole thing out we might as well give it the full once over. By "we" I mean myself and a friend who rebuilds transmissions for a living who I couldn't get a hold of since this problem started.
I'll take some pictures of the work as we go and post them as well as any helpful hints (if we stumble across any).

When you go remove the tranny you will realize there is another panel under your carpet you'll have to remove anyways to unbolt the tranny from the eninge. Thats the panel I was talking about

Thumbs up

You got that pegged! Thanx. Did your dad have any problems after taking off the shifter housing, putting it back together?
