Question Vehical speed sensor ?

vehical speed sensor or vss. Found this sensor on back of transmission. Haynes shows picture of sensor with a gear on the end. Looks easy to change. Is this the gear you change to adjust/recalibrate speedometer? If so Who sells this item? Capt.

Yes, it is. They are easy to swap. I suggest getting one from the dealer. You can get one to match the factory gear ratios.

Thanks crash1. Called dealer and they have gears in stock but have no Idea which one goes for 4.10 ratio. Told me to count my gear teeth and then tell them how many teeth I think I need.....Had 3.55 ratio went to 4.10... Anyone know how many teeth I need? Do I go up or down in the tooth count? Capt.

You go up in tooth count by the ratio of 4.10 divided by 3.55, or 1.15. So if you have a 19 tooth gear now, you would need a 22 tooth gear.

O.K. here's the math on mine please check-- I have 20 teeth and 3.55 ratio--- Now 4.10 ratio will need 23 teeth. 4.10/3.55 = 1.15 * 20 teeth = 23 or 20 teeth/ 3.55 = 5.63 * 4.10 = 23 Should put it right where it was before gear change.... Thanks! Learn something everyday .....Capt.

Before you change the speedo gear find out if your truck is equipped with a programmable speedometer. Cant remember off the top of my head if the 98's had em.
If so we've got the stuff at the Dealerships to reprogram the speedo to adjust for what you're trying to do. Every Gem and ABS module that we put in the 99 and ups have to be programed after installation now for tire size, differential size, what type of braking system.

struck99- Thanks for the post. Found out my 98 truck has no programmable speedo. It has E40D trans with vss sensor on tail shaft of transmission. Took it to the dealer and ford tech 44magnum hooked me up with a supplier [ STEEDA ] of a 23 tooth gear even after I gave him and others a hard time. { nice guy }--- Capt.

Since you were so helpful to Capt America, maybe you can help me also. I went from a 255/70 16 tire to a 265/70 w/ a 3.55 gear ratio. I'm sure my speedo is off. the dealer said I need to let him know how many teeth I have on the current gear and according to your msg I should have 20 and need to go to 19. Does this sound right. thanks,

You are going from 30.1" diameter to 31.6". So, take the number of teeth you currently have and multiply by 30.1/31.6 = 0.9525.

If you have 20 teeth now, you show go to 20*0.9525 = 19 teeth. If you currently have 19, you would go to 18.
