jamato-sk

I have a 2000, F150 Lariat Supercab with the 5.4l and the 4R70 tranny. My truck has 9.5k on it and it has plenty of torque and power.
I would have it checked out. You should notice right away the power and performance.

Did the other ones that you drove have the same rear end gear ratio as yours. That can make a big difference in performance.

There is a tag in the driverside door jab
under "TR" there will be a letter. If it is a "U" then it is 4r70. I believe "E" is the code for 4r100. Not sure if there are other letter that designate these trannies though.

you could go look at an automatic diesel on a lot and compare the tranny pan with yours.
if yours is smaller it is a 4r70 (diesels come with 4r100)

Most newer f150s get the 4r70 (except lightning and California trucks) I think there are a few exceptions, but not many.

Just curious -

Why would the California trucks come with the 4R100 and not the 4R70W?

Post Problems with 4r70 auto tranny?

Ever since I purchased my 2001 f150 5.4L I have had a sneaking suspicion that it was not as fast as other (exactly the same) 2001 f150s.
Well, I decided to go and test drive another 2001 f150 (same options).
Well it ends up that I am correct, my f150 performs significantly different than at least two other 2001 f150s but for not the reasons I originally thought.
It seems to me that the transmissions in the other two vehicles shifted a whole lot better (in every respect - shift timing, transition between gears, etc.) than my tranny. (All have the 4r70 tranny)

I feel this may be why my truck does not feel as powerful. Has anyone experienced the same issue and/or does anyone have any suggestions?

P.S. when I am accelerating at WOT, when the tranny shifts, I hear a "belt squeeling" noise. Tech said it indeed the serpentine belt slipping a little, which he says is normal - is that correct? seems kinda wrong to me.

I've had PLENTY of trouble with my tranny. Have a new one already -- 6000 miles. It, too, is shifting poorly.

CA and a few other states have different emmisions requirements and that package (LEV) includes the 4R100, VA and one of the New England states I think get the LEV package, I have heard that the '01 #7700 Payload on a Supercrew gets a 4R100 and that some CA trucks are getting the 4R70 this year, but I don't know that for sure. We do build a special tranny for the 5.4L F-150 in both 2 and 4 wheel drive configuration but jamato is right, most F-150s get the 4R70W.

I live in MA, my truck (bought in NH) has a sticker on the window which says LEV, and it has the trans. code U in the door sticker.

Factory_tech:

Do you have and insights/recommendations with my tranny suspicions?
Do you think there may be something wrong or just my paranoia getting the best of me?
Have you encountered any similar problems with the 4r70?
Any ideas on what to do next?

I just had 3 new seals installed on my 4r70w(pump, torque con.). I have 3800 miles on this truck(2000,f150 5.4 2 wheel drive)and I baby it. Now after I get it back the 1-2 shift shudders. I'm sure they reset the computer because the clock was behind. It had a much milder shudder when new but dissappered as the miles accumilated.

Thumbs up

Greetings all: I recently returned a 1998
f-150 4.6 2 wheel drive super cab to the leasing company. Gotta tell you, this truck was great. It had the 4r70w tranny which performed flawlessly even though I towed
a 4,000 pound trailer 30 miles twice
a week in rather hilly terain. Yes, it
had the factory tow package with 3.55 ratio
and limited slip. Get this, the front
brakes lasted 61,000 miles and the rears
are still OEM when sent back a month ago.
I put a note in the owners manual telling new owner when oil change is due. Have no fear of the 4r70w tranny, I have it in my 2001 supercrew and i'm glad.

Question

Factory Tech/Anyone Else

1) I have the LEV sticker on my 2001 but have the 4R70 instead of the 4R100..does this sound correct?

2) If I have my my gear selector in 1 and at 20-25mpg while at WOT I shift to 2 and the tranny will shift into 2nd right away and will make a noise that I have not heard before. Is this normal since I am "manualy" shifting the tranny or like me...abnormal?

Jamato..

I too get that squealing noise on my ride. I think that it was from all the crap that they put on the road to keep it from icing up. It must of gotten on the belt/pullies and made them slippery. After I washed the undercarridge of the truck with a pressure washer to get rid of all that crap the noise dissappeared.

BTW, Ignore my old signature..the tranny listed was wrong...i thought i had the 100 but didn't
