Trans shudder/chatter
hey, check this out from Baumann Enginnering - I think this part might be a solution and it is a simple/cheap fix:

Bypass Clutch Control Valve for AOD-E / 4R70W Transmissions
This precision replacement valve and orificed sleeve are manufactured by Sonnax utilizing superior construction and materials. These redesigned components help to prevent and eliminate torque converter clutch slip and shudder concerns in AOD-E and 4R70W transmissions. This valve is recommended for any AOD-E or 4R70W transmission that has higher mileage or has experienced torque converter clutch problems.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

My Wife has a 97 T-Bird, 4.6L
Her trans has been shuttering SO BAD for the last few months. I've been telling her to Baby it until we can trade the car in.
She came home last Friday and said, Now it is shuttering thru all gears. SOMETHING I DIDN'T NEED TO HEAR! So I took it to Ford Sat morning and played STUPID. Said I have this slight shuttering at lockup and would a flush take care of it. The Tech said he thought it might, so $100.00 later it runs like a new car. It was a BG system flush & fill. Best $100.00 I've spent in a long time.
Piece of Crap T-Bird is still going to be owned by someone else real soon. I will now sell it retail, instead of taking the pipe on a trade-in.

I paid 10 bucks for a Tip Sheet on the AOD-E / 4R70W Transmission. I do not know anything about this "solenoid" or the adjustment screw or the location of it. If you can help me with this I will e-mail you the entire document. It is a Microsoft notepad document.

Is there any known fix for this problem,my 99 started shuddering at 10,000 miles, the flush did not help.Threw the years I check back now and then to see if there was a final solution.
The shudded is not that bad yet and has stayed the same, only from 4th to 5th gear.------------------

Friend of mine had a 97 F150 that developed a shudder problem. Before talking to me he took it a mechanic that told him the transmission was shot and would cost at least $2000 for a remanufactured unit. Knowing how finicky these trannies can be when the fluid gets worn out I suggested a complete fluid and filter change first to see if that solves the shudder. After servicing the transmission it ran like new, no shudder at all. This incident and others reported on these boards has made me a believer in the necessity of keeping fresh fluid in these transmissions. A simple drain/fill at normal intervals should keep the shudder bug away.
Good stuff for the Fords....
Even says "recommended for most Ford vehicles" on the bottle. It has an anti-shudder additive that did wonders for my old shuddering '98.
