You have the 4R70W transmission. To confirm look on you drivers side door sticker. It will say "U" under Trans. But all V6's and 4.6L V8's had it (4R70W) and a lot of the 5.4L after a certain date and in certian locations have the same 4R70W tranny. Those 5.4L's with the 4R100 or its earlier version E4OD will have the code "E" under Trans on the door sticker.

Question

So which one do I have? I have code E, but does that mean I have the E40D or the 4R100? I would like to know, because I am thinking of ordering the B&M shiftplus for it. I'm just not sure what they put in this 250LD with a 3-99 build date.

I think in that point in 1999 it would have been the 4R100.

I have a '98 STX 4.2 V6. Does this mean I too have the 4R70W? The sticker on the inside of my drivers door is missing. How do I find out the other information that was on this sticker? Thanks

It's a 4R70W also, the E4OD/4R100 goes in all super duty trucks, Lightnings and Cal Emmisssion F-150s with the 5.4 L Engine. Expiditions and Excursions get 4R100s as well as Navigators.

Yep. Others have reported this was the case. It seems maybe there is a 4R70W that meets the CARB rating now.

Factory, did you ever confirm this?

No I haven't, and we still build a model esspecially for the CA emmission package, if y'all have a second, could ya look under the driver's side for the two digit model code on that? I'm curious as to what it has in it...

I crawled under my truck and found only a yellow sticker saying something about TSB- 0016 and referring to a 4R70W transmision exchange program. Did I get this transmission by mistake sibce it is supposedly the wrong one for California?

You cna't have the wrong transmission, unless what's on the door code is not what's in it, and even then, the door code could be wrong. I can't find any reason why a LEV with a 5.4 would have a 4R70, I do know for sure that we build 2 models of 4R100's that are esspecialy for LEVs (low emission vehichles). I do have a theory, though. Certain drivetrain combinations may meet CARB standards, but not the LEV stnadards, which apply to several more states than just California. I'm sure that Virginia is a LEV state now. Anyhow, maybe the "California 5.4" version is built for other states now, I just don't know. I do know that since we stopped building for F-150's (after the 97 Model Year) we continued to build a special model just for F-150s to be Licensed in California. That was the only reason we built them, the only F-150s to get them and the only way to get them was to buy a CA Emmissons package. (no lightnings in '98) And we still build the current MY of that paticular transmssion. I've asked anyone wiht a 5.4 and what they think is a 4R70 to post their model code so I could look it up, but no one has. Its the large 2 digit code on the side of the tranny on the driver's side. For 2000 MY it would be 1S for a Lightning, should be 1R for a 2WD and 4Z for a 4WD. Because of the diode problem the '01 codes have all changed, and to be honest I'd have to look them up cause just when I got used to one set, they switched to another. I think they were 5Q for a Lightning (you don't have one, none were actually built with this code), 5P for 2WD and 4U for 4WD, which is also the same transmission in an Expedition. Anyhow, someone get me the codes from the 4R70's and I'll decipher them 'cause I can't find anyone who knows why 5.4 LEV would have a 4R70W.
Sorry about rambling on there, but,....oh well, I ramble a lot, so sue me....

Funkster, crawl under your truck and look at your code for me, you definitely have a 4R100, but I'm curious as to which model the 'LD" got. It should be either a 3N or a 3P. I neer could keep track of the difference between an LD and an HD. I'd appreciate you letting me know. The model chart I use doesn't say "F-150" for instance, it says PN96 or P131 (super duty pickup) UN173 and stuff like that. NAyhow, I was wondering whether a LD was a PN102 or a PHN131. Confused yet?
If you can do it thanks, if you don't wanna, that's okay too. I'd appreciate it, though.
