Post Tranny thump.

I have a 2000 F-150 5.4 with auto. If I am coasting about 10-15mph and get on the throttle I hear a thump noise before the tranny kicks in. I have only 9,000 miles on it. It almost sounds like a mount is broken or something. Anyone else have the same problem? Thanks, Craig

Mine does it too, haven't figured it out yet.
I have tried a flush, and I'm about to try changing the shift solienoids. If you only have 9000 miles on it,I'd get a dealer guy to ride with you and check it out. Does it feel like the truck is at half power until the thump happens? That's what mine does, and now the thump is getting harder lately. last time I thought the tires were going to chirp.....98

Mine did something similar as well, but I have a 5 speed. Turns out, the tranny cross bar member bolts were loose, and one was missing...check yours.

I've had the same problem and it's gotten worse since day one (2,250 miles now). Based on a Ford service advisory, my dealer checked the alignment of the main gear in the rear end and found that it was beyond the specified tolerance. They believe that this misalignment is what's casuing the clunk. Next Monday (12/18) they're going to replace the main gear, bushings, shims and bearings. They think this will eliminate the problem. I'll do another posting in about a week...after I've had a good chance to check the repairs.

Did you get it fixed? Mine is still doing it but I can't duplicate it consistently. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. The worst kind of problem!

Just wondering what you found?

It's not going in until Tuesday. Mine does the same thing. Sometimes it does it, sometime it does not. I'll let you know Wed.

Unhappy

The repair seems to have improved the situation except at right about 23-25mph...although I must admit that the truck seems to shift better and feel smoother now. Before the repair, the thumping was pretty consistent at anywhere between 20-30mph. The service staff was really great so I don't want to ruin their X-Mas with a "comeback". I'll take it back next week and see what else the can do.

I have the same problem. I had the dealer check it out, they said all the pressures check out fine, and that the clunk was normal???? Ya right. I may try another dealer in a couple of months, see what they think.

Well...I took my truck back this week and they did another round of diagnostics. No obvious problems discovered, although everybody agrees that the clunk is there and that it seems to be worsening. My service rep confirmed what Factory_Tech recently said in another thread. https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000784.html It's cheaper for Ford to do an R&R than to spend local shop time on extended diagnostics. The upshot is that they've ordered me a new tranny. It should be in sometime next week. I'll keep ya'll posted.
