Downshifting

Whenever I am going aroung 40-45 MPH and I floor the gas pedal, it seems to take a few seconds for the transmission to shift from OD to a lower gear. I want a faster accelerator response than what it is giving me. Is there something wrong with my 4R70W? If not, what would help this problem? A chip or shift kit maybe. Any suggestions are welcome.

The 1st plan of action with any transmission problem is to change out all of the fluid in the tranmission, as well as the torque converter.

what if it's brand new, still change out the oil

I'd say put in a shift kit while you've got the pan off changing the fluid, especially if you don't like the powder puff shifts becasue slow and soft shifts seem to be the design intent Engineers shoot for when selecting the overall theme of comfort and ride feel and that's been the trend for many years. Transgo and B&M and others survive because automotive transmissions are primarily designed for the smoothest shift and feel possible so as to not upset drivers. Well, it upsets me in the opposite way, I hate powder puff shifts and it actually damages the transmission and it can cause excessive heat and can cause premature failure due to too much shift overlap or dragging between gears and the engagement of the clutch packs or bands, whichever it may be.

Install a shift kit...That should take care of your slow response issue.

You can use Mercon V, but I recently switched to Redline D4, which I've noticed is smoother on the shifts. Maybe I'm hypertuned to my truck but it does feel smoother. When I downshift it hits harder, too.

I'd go with what AJ says~ change out the fluid/filter/Tq convr. then go from there.

Hey a shift kit wn't hurt, or a chip for that matter. Start with the least expensive thing first.

Guys,

I spoke with Mike Troyer with Performance Products, the Super Chips Distributor for F150Online, yesterday and he explained to me that Ford has incorporated a 1.5 second delay in the computer code that creates the delay that radjks is probably eluding to. Hmmm, I didn't think to ask him if the shift kit would override this feature. If it doesn't, then I know that either the Super Chips or the Microtuner will eliminate the delay, if your willing to spend upwards of $300.

Sorry if I may have misled anyone that the shift kit would eliminate this known factory kickdown delay, I'm not 100% sure that it will or will not now.

when you guys install these shift kits are you overiding any sort of torque management that ford is using to help keep the 4r70w from shredding to bits?? i'm just trying to figure out why there is a delay in downshfts built in with the factory electronics...

Troy,

Good question, I don't think it's going to hurt the tranny to jump into a lower gear without the delay, never had it before transmissions were controlled electronically. Hell, for almost ever, trannies had a kick down cable that was directly connected to the throttle and thus, instand down shifts were normal.

I was told that all the electronics features in transmissions of today is just for women drivers, they constitute over half the owner/driver relations that auto manufactures design for, and typically they don't like quick shifts, too much shaking going on and they might get excited by the vibrations ...dunno, shouldn't hurt and may possibly help as if there's a delay, then the engine has a chance to build up more RPMs before it finially does jump down to the next lower gear.

Maybe the thought is if someone inadvertantly punches the gas just for fun, they don't get the neck jerking downshift...If on the other hand they really do want to pass, then they'll wait 1.5 seconds and live with it...dunno.

You're up early boy, checking out the weather or something? hehe
