Question Tranny applications

My curiosity is getting to me...I know there is the 4R70W and the 4R100, but what engines are they behind? And trucks? Are they both used in the Super Duty, Lightining, etc...? Also, what are each tranny rated at? Thanks!

Question

Here's my guess...

F150's 1997-1999:
4.2 & 4.6 got 4R70W
5.4 got E4OD/4R100
Lightning gets "stronger" version of 5.4 tranny

F150's 2000+:
All get 4R70W except those with 5.4 and CA emissions- still gets 4R100
Lightning still gets 4R100

Heavy-duty/Super-Duty:
All get 4R100

Ratings:
Explanation from people here is that the "70" in 4R70W is short for 700 ft-lbs of torque. The "100" in 4R100 is for 1,000 ft-lbs of torque. However, I also understand that there are different "versions" of these trannys that have different ratings. Lightning tranny for example.

You're absolutly right about the ratings. There are 30 +/- versins of the 4R100 in any given year, I would gusess at least as many 4R70 varients. One or another is not stronger per se than another, just different, all are still rated for 1,000 lbs/ft. Most of the version differences are related to torque converters and shift characteristics. A Lightning shifts very hard compared to a Navigator, but both have a different version of the 4R100.
A very few F-150s still get 4R100s, the Lightning is one, cetain states have standards that require Ford to use 4R100s in some other models with the 5.4. No 4.6 ahs ever had a 4R100 or E4OD, though.
