Question trans fluid, when to change?

i was reading the manual and it was saying at 40k the trans fluid should be changed.. anyone hold that time in high reguard or is it flexable?

I'm asking because I bought my truck with 38k on it and has 42 now.. getting a little worried

Patrick,

Do yourself a favor and do it! Full flush including torque converter. Bite the bullet on the cost at the dealer (about $130) including 12 quarts of fluid.

I just changed mine at 46,000, first time it had been changed, but I only drained the pan. Any ideas on how to drain the converter. I have a manual by Haynes, but it doesn't address draining the converter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Look for a rubber plug at the bottom of the bell housing. If you remove the plug you can see the TC, and rotate it until you see the drain plug, it should be fitted with one.

If not, the way to do it is to run the motor with the trans cooler line disconnected and pump the fluid out till the thing start spitting, stop the motor. Fill 5-6 quarts of fluid then start the motor again, look for spitting again or clear fluid, stop the motor, top it off.
