Transmission/Transfer Case Fluid
I am about to change the transmission fluid and the transfer case oil on my '97 Ford F150 4x4. I was just wondering if anyone out there could give me a list of correct fluids/oils that are commonly used...synthetic vs not, etc. I mainly use the truck for everyday driving, pulling a boat in the summers, and off-roading every now and then.
Thanks!
Thanks!
bigjws...when changing fluids in transmissions and transfer cases there is no question as to what type of oil to use.....
SYNTHETIC ONLY!!!!
Differentials you can get away with using a reagular gear oil...but when it comes to Trans/Cases ONLY USE SYNTHETICS because of the bearings and other expensive components inside.
Spend the little extra money and go SYNTHETIC!

Your manual trans takes AFT. I used synthetic ATF in the trans and transfer case. At the same time I changed the fluids in the rear and front differential. The front takes 75-90 and the rear(with limited slip),takes 75-140 syn from the factory along with 4 oz of friction modifier.

Both the Manual and Automac transmissins now take ATF
Of coarse synthetic will help both of these components last longer and perform better under everyday drive and extreme performance as in off roading and towing.
I also believe that the transfer case takes AFT.
The front Diffs take 75w90 and the rear differentials take 75w140 synthetic as indicated on the tag located on the bolt on the rear diff.
Amsoil, mobil and Redline all make suitable synthetic fluids for our fords.
Of coarse we all know which brand I favor!
