Hi ROUSHFAN,

I doubt the Superchip has anything to do with this, but you can always pull it and re-seat it to see if that takes care of it, and then you'll know for sure.

More likely, you have a problem with your shift solenoids, which are notoriously weak in these Ford automatics, though they have gotten better in later years, they are up to about their 8th revision in the 4R70W automatics!

When mine failed, what would happen is anytime I gave it enough throttle for a downshift, and I don't mean full-throttle, but just enough to make it downshift, it would go up into neutral, the engine would rev up, and then BANG!, it would slam down into gear, very rough on the transmission. This was because the original owner of my vehicle allowed the transmission fluid to burn badly, and it fried the shift solenoids, valve body, and other parts.

Shift solenoids do not have to be overheated like mine were to fail, this is something that happens with these transmissions on occasion. The shift solenoids are relatively inexpensive, and mounted right to the valve body, so they are always bathed in the transmission fluid.

Sometimes when they're bad, you can hear a thumping sound from the floorboard when the ECU sends the signal to the shift solenoids, but more often you don't hear anything, you just get those wierd symptoms; they can vary, but one common theme is slipping up into neutral, out of gear, and then going back into gear. 3 different dealers were not able to diagnose my problem, even though it could be re-created at will. I had to find all this out from aftermarket TSB's from Alldata, though I think a "good" service department could zero in on this by now.

There also used to be an *excellent* article on this transmission at this enthusiast web site for Thunderbird owners: www.mn12performance.com

I don't know if it's still there, but it is an excellent article, written by Rich Thompson.

This may or may not be your problem, but it's at least something to check that some dealers seem rather ignorant about in my experience.

Good luck!

Question

Hey Mike and Roushfan,,I was looking back here to see if anyone was having the same problems as me. Lo and behold...
here it is! Mine doesn't have any problems at shift points...as long as I'm doing a steady acc. If I let off the gas and then reapply it will slip and thunk in to the gear it should be in... Last night it started something new,It jumps out of gear momentarily then goes back. This was when I was climbing a low grade hill. It wasn't shifting at the time,it was right in the middle of second(around 25 or so mph) Please answer,Mike, this is bugging me bigtime! from what you have mentioned here and in person, you seem to have a lot of exp. with these bad solienoids. Does this sound like a sol. problem?

Hi 98Screamer,

Sounds like it could be, but it won't be known for sure until you replace them.

A symptom of being in gear, like you were there in second gear, and then the transmission suddenly pops into neutral and then back down into gear is usually a shift solenoid problem, though other things can cause this.

Luckily the shift solenoids are a pretty cheap part, you can order them separately from the valve body itself.

Before doing this, I would have this checked out at your dealership, especially if you are still under warranty since it's a 1998 model. The bad shift solenoids in my Mark 8's 4R70W were not properly diagnosed by any of the 3 Lincoln dealers I took mine to, I had to find out about it in an aftermarket TSB from Alldata, and then I spent $1300 to replace a lot of parts, get the latest valvebody & shift solenoids, a shift kit, synthetic fluid, etc., and that took care of it, it was the solenoids in my case.

This doesn't mean that your problem is absolutely for certain related to the shift solenoids, but it sure sounds a bit suspicious, and should be checked.

Good luck!

Thanks Mike, Just noticed my trans fluid looks burned. Going to get it changed today!! if possible. I hope someone close does it,afraid to drive it now. Is it possible I got the wrong fluid last time?
I had it done at a dealer ,so I hope not.
I had it done about 26k and now I'm at 48.
Hopefully this will take care of it.......98

I believe there is a Recall on all 5.4 engines with automatics (the only way they come). Ibelieve the reason for the recall is for 2nd gear failure. My truck just started this with 27,000 miles on it.

Hi Screamer,

If your tranny fluid is burnt, your could very well have shift solenoids problems, as they are attached to the valve body and reside bathed in that fluid. It weas burned fluid that did the damage to mine as well. If the fluid was badly burned, to where it has changed colors to almost black, then the torque conveter could need replacing as well.

I would go ahead and install an auxilliary transmission oil cooler (even if you have a factory unit) and change over to synthetic fluid (including draining the torque conveter!) so that this does not happen again. I installed a deep pan and a forged billet cooler (that's way too expensive, you don't need a forgeed billet unit) and plumbed it all with aircraft-quality braided stainless steel lines & quick-disconnect fittings.

Good luck!
