Cool Rand, the "slipping" feeling . . .

got fixed on my truck.

Hopefully what I described was the same thing that your's is doing. I took it in to the dealer for regular maintenance and mentioned this slipping thing. The service mgr seemed to know exactly what I was talking about and it turns out that they fixed it.

They said the problem was with the slip yoke. Sorry, I don't know the exact function of this part but I understood it something like this: it's in the driveline and when you accelerate this slip yoke is supposed to "slide" as the vehicle accelerates. In my case, the lubrication was not up to snuff so it would stick and then "pop" when there was finally enough pressure to make it move. Normally when it is properly lubricated it will just slide freely and not stick.

Anyway, they applied some sort of lube to the slip yoke and voila, no sticking or popping !!!

Anyway I hope this helps you out. Hopefully yours is the same thing, it was a pretty easy fix for them and the service mgr seemed to know exactly what it was when I was describing it to him so it's likely a fairly common thing.

Good luck !!!

I am a 1st time ford owner and I have that slow ,lazy shifting feeling too.But only at low speeds 25mph or lower.is this a ford trait or maybe slip yoke? I read that a chip would change the shift points making the transmission more responsive, anybody know any different?

Thanks man,
When I bought my truck it had this problem and they thought I was a fool. I was a mechanic for 10 years for GM and I am not a fool(well, at least I don't think so). Anyhow, took it in last week and it has been there a week and they still did not find any problem and "tightened some bolts". Which we all know is hogwash. Thanks for the information and I will fix the problem myself.

First off, I'm glad that you bought a Ford after working for GM for 10 years !

Second, I hope that this helps out. I know the problem we were describing could be the cause of numerous things (depending on how we describe it/interpret it, etc.). Anyway, I hope that this is the problem you had and that it gets fixed. From what the service mgr told me, it wasn't a complex procedure at all and it was quite common for this to occur.

Anyway, good luck

Cool

Thanks,
This is the first Ford that I have owned. What sold me on it was I could get in and move the seat back until I could not touch the pedals!!! All the GM extended cabs I have owned made me feel cramped up inside. This sounds just like a problem we had on the early new body style Chevy trucks. We would put a valve spring in the drive shaft yoke also to make sure it move back and forth properly. I am going to try this fix this weekend. I am sure it will correct the problem that it has. Hey, I like the Ford products so well that I bought my wife a new Lincoln LS Sport too!!!

Cool

Rand: You can do this yourself. It's basically pulling the driveshaft. The tranny end is what you will lubricate. Don't know about the trucks, but the Mustang would leak tranny fluid out the rear when the shaft is out. So maybe it would be good to do it in conjunction with a tranny drain/filter.

Hi All,
Thanks to Cougar for sharing the fix on his truck. I decided to fix my own since the dealership thought I was an idiot. Fixed problem!!!! Shame that they cannot do something as simple as that. Just take out the driveshaft and grease the yoke where it slips into the transmission and make sure to put some on the inside also. This will correct any slipping or popping when taking off. It also corrected my popping noise when I took it out of OD at highway speeds. Thanks again for the information to fix it and I hope this helps someone else.

Cool

I'm glad that I could help . . . I'm also glad that the service mgr at my dealership was able to understand what I was talking about. After reading some of the posts here it sure is refreshing to have a service dept that actually tries to help thier customers.

Good luck everyone !

Question

Anyone know if this is possible on the 5 spd too? Mine feels like the clutch is slipping when I accelerate from 2nd or 3rd, but it only does it if I am already in 2nd or 3rd and have slowed down then speed back up. Normal accelration through the gears are fine.

Funny this is mentioned, i just noticed a while ago my 5sp 4.6 4x4 120" was doing this. I just had the tranny out before my warrenty ran dry b/c the synchros were gone. The truck sat for a month (so it seemed) waiting for parts, so likely the yoke which was in the back of the truck got dry? I'm going to look at it tonight when i get home from work.
