Question Grinding Transmission

I have a 5-spd manual in a 4.6L and I noticed that whenever I shift from 3->4, I hear a wonderful grinding noise. It's the same noise you hear when you're just learning to drive a manual and grind your tranny. I've noticed that it happens after 2500 predominatnly. If I shift from 3rd and wait for a second or more in neutral, then move to 4th, the noise does not occur.

To cut a long story short, I spoke to a tech at the dealership and he suggested that a synchronizer could be going bad, or is bad. My question is, should I ask for a new transmission or is this something that can be replace relatively easily. The truck has 23K miles on it and is 6 months, 1 day old

Thanks for any info!!

Regards,
Alvin

I too had a grinding in my tranny. I think it's just one of the tranny's idiosyncrocies. Anyway, I switched to Mobil1 synthetic ATF. Grinding gone! Regards, m.a.t.

So maybe the problem is just that I need to flush the transmission fluid and refill it? I guess I need to go back a few posts and see what else needs to be done.

In any case, I drove past the dealership on my way home and I spoke with them. They'll still look at it on Monday so I'll wait a bit and see what happens.

Thanks for your response! The info is much appreciated.

Regards,
Alvin

alvinsb,

Have your Dealer fix the tranny. Mine was grinding and it was replaced.

I spoke with the service manager today. Apparently he's heard of this before and has repaired another 2000 F-150 with the same problem. He's ordering new gears for the tranny. Hopefully I'll get my truck back before this weekend. I'll let you guys know how things turn out. In the mean time I'll be putting around in a Chevy Metro (I'm 6'3"). I really miss my truck. . .

I got my truck back on Friday. The tech replaced the syncro on 3rd and 4th gear, and 4th gear as well (even though there was no apparent damage to it). But it works well. 3rd's a little stiff, but it probably just needs to be broken in. My only question now is, can anyone tell me if and how to bleed the clutch? Thanks!

Have 99 F-150 that ground 1 ->2. Ford Dealer diagnosed as a blocker not functioning. Pulled tranny to repair. Had factory tag "do not open, quality control unit" Ford replaced with new tranny. At ~1000 miles this second new tranny will grind when 1->2 or 3->4 shift under high load or RPM. I believe this is a design problem with the tranny. Would like to collect metrics from others and figure out who we talk with. Once is irritating, twice is a significant problem.
