Post Chattering Tranny

I have a 98 F-150 XLT 4x4 with a 4.6 and a 5sp. This is not a serious noise or problem yet but it makes me a little nervous. My tranny (and the actual stick) chatter a lot. The chattering increases as the rpm's do. I do not notice any grinding while running up through the gears. The tranny does grind however when I down shift from 4th to 3rd if I am going faster than 35mph. Am I just going to fast to drop it into 3rd? That is the only gear that reacts like that. Please give me some input.

Maybe the driveshaft is bent or out of balance? Have you had the driveshaft out? Maybe rear tires out of balance, bolts loose in transmission mount?

The drive shaft has not been messed with, I know that. I have never checked the the tranny mount bolts though. It doesn't seem that serious. The truck does not shake or anything like that just the stick. I will take a look at those bolts.

Stump,
I have a 97 4.6 sp and it does the same thing. It makes me nervous too because, well, let's face it...The damn things cost too much to **** the bed on ya! Especially when they're 2 and three years old. I am going to try flushing my transmission and replacing the fluid with Mobil 1 synthetic. I would try that as a first step. A few guys have told me that it works.

Well I still have 3 years left on my warrenty and everything is covered bumper to bumper. So that keeps me relaxed when dealing with the price issue. I am going to switch to all synthetic fluids here soon. I am running Mobil 1 oil now. I will definitly try that. Thank You
