Question Leaking differential, worry or not?

I have an oil stain on the bottom of my differential that starts at the front where the driveshaft bolts on and the u-joints are also a liitle stained. How much is the
repair on this seal. I have an extended warranty on the truck, but is this covered?
It's not real bad, kind of dry looking. But it
keeps me wondering. I haven't noticed any driveline clunking but there is a faint
howling. I can't remember if this sound
started with my directional tires or not. It starts at about 10 miles an hour and doesn't get worse or better with accelleration or decelleration. Should I be
concerned with this or just get it repaired
at my discretion?,,,,,,,,,,98

Yeah, always worry about metal to metal contact.

To check to see if there's any oil left in the diff. undo the plug on the upper back and stick your pinky in there.

Ford uses a synthetic diff oil.

Just changed mine today and it really made the truck fly.

I would worry about a leak @ the pinion. Usually indicates there is contamination (metal particles) trying to escape from the diff. Also, leak @ pinion could indicate a problem with driveshaft or driveshaft angularity. Is the truck vibrating?

Cool

Nope,no vibration. I don't feel like buying
a rear axle though. I'll get it looked at while my plugs are getting changed. Shouldn't cost more than the $185 they want to change them. That still amazes me.

98SCREAMER,
I wouldn't worry too much. What you are likely seeing is "molecular migration". Basically the oil is weeping past the seal. Particularly with Automotive seals (as opposed to hi-vacuum) they are liely to produce a weeping-stain leak. If you see a trickle or drops on the floor, then I would start chasing it. My '92 ranger showed this at 92K miles, when I sold it.
One of the other posts mentioned that metal fragments could be chewing up the seal. This is a possibility I agree with. The definitive way to tell, is to send an oil sample to blackstone labs (~$20). They'll send you results about 1-2 weeks after they receive it. E-mail them and they will send you a free sample kit. If there are metal frags in the fluid, it will show on their analysis. (http://www.blackstone-labs.com/)
With the 4.6, you should have the 8.8 diff. I would install a mag-hytec cover. There are some other active posts (by 98FWORD) that give some detail on them.

Tony

Did you say $185 to change the plugs?

Someone just shoot me right now.

Is that for new motorcraft plugs at the dealer?

So it's a 3 hour job now? hmmmm.

If any one says this is normal, what ever. This is the first time one of my trucks has experienced this.
I have 6k on mine right now.
Pinion seal is leaking. Dealer is replacing it.

Cool

I have 45k on mine, but have an extended
warranty. Is this covered? I do believe I have all my oil change reciepts,I've heard
I'll need those. What is this svc. interval
for the 8.8 anyway? so many questions,
so little time. Has anyone switched to a
9". I'm curious about a swap.
