Question transmission vent?

Was pulling around a trailer the other day, working it back into position on a slight grade. Was letting the clutch lightly slip on purpose to back up real slow. Could smell the faint clutch smell after I parked. Just curious, where does the smell come from, is the transmission vented somewhere? Is this vent a route for water if I was traveling thru high water? I know the diff has a vent and can get water inside. Thanks.

On all transmissions, there is a "jiggle cap" or right angle vent on top of the case, most pickups except super duty have the jiggle cap, the right angle recirculates the vented gases into the crankcase I think. 4WD models also a vent on the differential.
