Question Manual Trans Rough Shift To 2nd

I have a 2000 F-150 with 4.2 and manual trans. Sometimes the shift from 1st to 2nd is very rough. I can feel a kind of bump just putting it in 2nd gear with the clutch fully depressed. All other shifts are fine. Any help is appreciated

This seems to be a common problem with the 5 speeds. I have the same problem shifting into 2nd gear. If i shift very slow, there is only a little notchiness. If i shift like a regular shift, that is a normal speed, it sometimes sticks between 1st and 2nd. The funny thing is, one or two shifts a day into 2nd it's smooth. Can't understand that.

I have had similar problems although mine seem to be a bit worse. I have already had the transmission replaced once due to problems shifting at 2000 miles. The dealer said the original transmission had bad synchros.

The “supposed” new transmission is not much better. I have taken it in two times and the dealer always says that it is working normally and I need to drive differently.

If binding, notchey (sp?) shifts, intermittent refusal to go into 1st, or reverse is “normal”, then the transmission is a very poor design. I have been driving standards for 25 years and I am not the problem. This transmission does not work very well.

Search back through the archives of this site and you will find a lot of people with the same problem. IMHO Ford has a problem with these transmissions and is unwilling to admit it due to their exposure.

I have learned to live with the problem because it is easier than arguing with the dealer. I force it into gear, listen to the clunks when it binds, put up with grinding, and will wait until it fails again, which I have no doubt it will. Then it is back to the dealer for another new rebuild within the 3/36 warranty. As soon as I can I am selling this lemon and getting something with an auto transmission.
