Question Changing tranny fluid

I just changed the fluid & filter in my automatic transmission. But I was only able to get about 6 1/2 quarts drained. Is there any other way to get more fluid out without pulling the trans. or trans. cooler/lines? Or is my only option is to have it flushed?

6 1/2 isn't much! You can pull the rubber access plug on the trans, turn the engine with a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley nut until you see the Torque Converter plug through the access hole, then unscrew the plug. You will get at least another 5 quarts out of the converter itself.

Cool

If you drain the pan and the torque converter, this is good enough. If you are a fanatic, do this twice (after installing a drainplug in the pan). This is the best that you can do yourself. If you have a shop flush the system, ask if it hooks up to the filter flange or the exterior lines. If they use the exterior line type, this is just another way to get a leak due to removing the lines, so just skip it.

Granpa & M.M.,

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it out this weekend again. But is there any precautions when removing the conveter plug or is it pretty straight forward? Thanks again.

Thumbs up

Just do like Granpa says, it's straight forward. Don't overtighten the plug, just snug it up firm.
